Abstract: In the presence of hydrogen peroxide and either potassium iodide, sodium chloride, or potassium bromide, purified human myeloperoxidase was rapidly lethal to several species of Candida. Its candidacidal activity was inhibited by cyanide, fluoride, and azide, and by heat inactivation of the enzyme. A hydrogen peroxidegenerating system consisting of d-amino acid oxidase, flavine-adenine dinucleotide, and d-alanine could replace hydrogen peroxide in the candidacidal system. Horseradish peroxidase and human eosinophil granules also exerted candidacidal activity in the presence of iodide and hydrogen peroxide; however, unlike myeloperoxidase or neutrophil granules, these peroxidase sources were inactive when chloride replaced iodide. Cells of Saccharomyces, Geotrichum, and Rhodotorula species, and spores of Aspergillus fumigatus and A. niger were also killed by the combination of myeloperoxidase, iodide, and hydrogen peroxide. Peroxidases, functionally linked to hydrogen peroxide-generating systems, could provide phagocytic cells with the ability to kill many fungal species.

Abstract: The iodine intake level in a population is determined in cross-sectional studies. Urinary iodine varies considerably and the reliability of studies of iodine nutrition and the number of samples needed is unsettled. We performed a longitudinal study of sixteen healthy men living in an area of mild to moderate iodine deficiency. Iodine and creatinine concentrations were measured in spot urine samples collected monthly for 13 months. From these data we calculated the number of urine samples needed to determine the iodine excretion level for crude urinary iodine and for 24 h iodine excretion estimated from age- and gender-specific creatinine excretions. We found that mean urinary iodine excretion varied from 30 to 87 microg/l (31 to 91 microg/24 h). Sample iodine varied from 10 to 260 microg/l (20 to 161 microg/24 h). Crude urinary iodine varied more than estimated 24 h iodine excretion (population standard deviation 32 v. 26; individual standard deviation 29 v. 21; Bartlett's test, P < 0.01 for both). The number of spot urine samples needed to estimate the iodine level in a population with 95 % confidence within a precision range of +/- 10 % was about 125 (100 when using estimated 24 h iodine excretions), and within a precision range of +/- 5 % was about 500 (400). A precision range of +/- 20 % in an individual required twelve urine samples or more (seven when using estimated 24 h iodine excretions). In conclusion, estimating population iodine excretion requires 100-500 spot urine samples for each group or subgroup. Less than ten urine samples in an individual may be misleading.

Abstract: Sporophytes of Laminaria digitata (L.) Lamour. were assayed for their content of accumulated iodine, which ranged from 0.4% of dry weight in adult plants up to 4.7% for young plantlets. Sporophyte tissue from Laminaria saccharina (L.) Lamour. and L. digitata took up iodide according to Michaelis-Menten kinetics. Hydrogen peroxide and various substances known to interfere with oxidative metabolism were shown to either inhibit or enhance the uptake of iodide, confirming that apoplastic oxidations play a key role in iodide uptake in Laminaria. Consistently, iodide uptake was triggered in L. saccharina protoplasts by incubation in the presence of hydrogen peroxide. Similarly, the uptake of iodide was enhanced in L. digitata gametophytes by addition of haloperoxidase, suggesting that this enzyme catalyses the oxidation of iodide by hydrogen peroxide and plays a key role in iodine uptake. Oxidative stress resulted in a marked efflux of the intracellular iodine. In both influx and efflux experiments, a marked proportion (10–30%) of the tracer was not accounted for, indicating volatilisation of iodine. The mechanism and possible functions of the accumulation of iodine by kelps are discussed.

Abstract: The optical changes that occur upon the addition of iodide, iodine, and colloidal silver iodide to a colloidal solution of silver particles (6-nm mean diameter) were monitored spectrophotometrically. For small concentrations of added I - and I 2 (formation of less than a monolayer of adsorbate), the changes in the shape of the silver plasmon absorption band are practically identical. Silver iodide particles in contact with silver particles affect the plasmon band only slightly. It is concluded that the AgI molecules formed by the surface oxidation of the Ag particles by iodine do not possess the properties of bulk AgI
