TL;DR: In this paper, a containerized IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) infrastructure, dubbed cIMS, is proposed to evaluate the utilization of virtual resources under constrained conditions and an extended version of the Pollaczek-Khinchin formula is used to deal with bulk arrivals.
Abstract: The Next Generation 5G Networks can greatly benefit from the synergy between virtualization paradigms, such as the Network Function Virtualization (NFV), and service provisioning platforms such as the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS). The NFV concept is evolving towards a lightweight solution based on containers that, by contrast to classic virtual machines, do not carry a whole operating system and result in more efficient and scalable deployments. On the other hand, IMS has become an integral part of the 5G core network, for instance, to provide advanced services like Voice over LTE (VoLTE). In this paper we combine these virtualization and service provisioning concepts, deriving a containerized IMS infrastructure, dubbed cIMS, providing its assessment through statistical characterization and experimental measurements. Specifically, we: $\textit {i)}$ model cIMS through the queueing networks methodology to characterize the utilization of virtual resources under constrained conditions; $\textit {ii)}$ draw an extended version of the Pollaczek-Khinchin formula, which is useful to deal with bulk arrivals; $\textit {iii)}$ afford an optimization problem focused at maximizing the whole cIMS performance in the presence of capacity constraints, thus providing new means for the service provider to manage service level agreements (SLAs); $\textit {iv)}$ evaluate a range of cIMS scenarios, considering different queuing disciplines including also multiple job classes. An experimental testbed based on the open source platform Clearwater has been deployed to derive some realistic values of key parameters (e.g., arrival and service times).

TL;DR: This paper proposes a system design that can be adapted to any telco use case without the need for complex coordination among the network control, the stateless network functions, and the state storage backend, and shows that in certain cases the design outperforms the state-of-the-art significantly.
Abstract: While the industry is still struggling to embrace the network function virtualization paradigm, recently a novel approach has appeared with the promise of improving the state-of-the-art: stateless virtualized network functions. Rooted in cloud-native computing, this design outsources the state embedded in virtual network functions to a dedicated "state storage" layer, facilitating elastic scaling and resiliency. While related work mostly focuses on performance, we in this paper pinpoint all other factors that weigh in when it comes to deploying the stateless design in a carrier-grade operator network. Among those we argue that reliability and flexibility are key, and we propose a system design that can be adapted to any telco use case without the need for complex coordination among the network control, the stateless network functions, and the state storage backend. Then, in extensive evaluations on synthetic use cases we show that the additional flexibility provided by our design does not come at a performance penalty; in fact, in certain cases our design outperforms the state-of-the-art significantly. Finally, we present what to our knowledge is the first product-phase realization of the stateless paradigm, an operational virtualized IP Multimedia Subsystem that can restore the live call records of thousands of mobile subscribers under a couple of seconds with half the resources required by a traditional "stateful" design.

TL;DR: This work considers a container-based version of IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) infrastructure, a crucial player within next generation telecommunication networks, a.k.a. 5G, and offers an availability evaluation of a containerized IMS deployment through i) Reliability Block Diagram (RBD) formalism useful to model high-level interconnections among cIMS nodes, and ii) Stochastic Reward Networks (SRN) methodology.
Abstract: Nowadays, telecom providers may benefit from the flexibility offered by Network Function Virtualization (NFV) paradigm that allows to decouple the service logic from the underlying hardware infrastructure. Thus, main functionalities of network nodes (e.g. routers, firewalls, load balancers etc.) can be deployed on a virtual machine (VM) with its own resources. On the other hand, deploying a whole VM (which hosts a single virtualized network service) can be expensive, since too many resources are uselessly wasted. A valuable alternative is offered by containers, namely, virtualized and lightweight processes that, differently from classical VMs, do not carry a whole operating system. In this work we consider a container-based version of IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) infrastructure, a crucial player within next generation telecommunication networks, a.k.a. 5G. More precisely, we offer an availability evaluation of a containerized IMS (cIMS) deployment through i) Reliability Block Diagram (RBD) formalism useful to model high-level interconnections among cIMS nodes, and ii) Stochastic Reward Networks (SRN) methodology which allows to analyze the evolution of the cIMS life cycle in presence of failure and repair events. Moreover, we perform a sensitivity analysis aimed at evaluating the whole cIMS robustness with respect to deviations of some critical parameters.

Abstract: This paper demonstrates the realization of different network services, 5G Test Network (5GTN) as a mobile network operator at the University of Oulu provides based on an open access network availability for research and innovation. A network platform with use case and service dedicated slicing is designed on the fundamental principles of ETSI compliant NFV Management and Network Orchestration (MANO) framework. The slicing is done primarily on the Core Networks (CN) with evolved packet core and ip multimedia subsystem functionalities in different slices. The virtual network function instances are instantiated in OpenStack and VMWare cloud environments using an NFV Orchestrator. The virtual instances and the required resources can be instantiated, terminated and scaled in a slice according to the requirements of the end user and nature of the use case. Focusing on different service demands, the paper demonstrates three test cases utilizing different slices from the components in the CN for each case. It also provides an overview on radio spectrum sharing possibility between two operators on a specified service level agreement with each operator having own CN infrastructure.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors analyzed the functioning of the IMS core in solving problems of combining signaling traffic and data networks of various technologies, and proposed models that allow calculating the amount of incoming traffic from heterogeneous networks and the amount after it is converted to the standard form of IMS architecture.
Abstract: Today, Ukraine is actively working on solving the problems of convergence of networks of various technologies, ensuring their compatibility in management, signaling and data traffic, providing users with modern services with specified QoS indicators. In the process of implementing 4G and 4.5G technologies in the networks of mobile operators, it turned out that the voice traffic service is possible only when using a core network with switching channels of 2G and 3G technologies. And in order for voice traffic to be serviced in batch mode, it is necessary to bring the network of the mobile operator in accordance with the requirements of the IMS architecture. The implementation of IMS provides a solution to two main tasks. The first is the solution to the problem of interaction between networks of various technologies at the level of signal flows. The second task is to ensure the interaction of networks of various technologies at the level of data flows. These tasks are solved at the control level, the main functional elements of which are the functional blocks CSCF, P-CSCF, I-CSCF, S-CSCF. When designing the IMS management level, it is necessary to determine the amount of traffic that will be served by these CSCF functional elements. Then, it is necessary to calculate the required performance of the elements for serving signal traffic and data streams. At the same time, it is very important to provide the required reliability indicators for the IMS management level. The article analyzes the functioning of the IMS core in solving problems of combining signaling traffic and data networks of various technologies. The list of the main elements involved in the process of solving management problems is determined. Models are proposed that allow calculating the amount of incoming traffic from heterogeneous networks and the amount of traffic after it is converted to the standard form of IMS architecture. To ensure the indicated reliability indicators of IMS, the use of methods of reservation of functional elements of the control level is provided. Models have been developed and analytical expressions have been obtained for calculating the values of reliability indicators using various reservation methods.

TL;DR: This paper proposes the call routing mechanisms and the enhancement based on E.164 NUmber Mapping (ENUM) and the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) architecture to provide the NP service for 4G/5G mobile communications.
Abstract: Typically, people usually enjoy new services and lower service rates. However, while changing the mobile operators, the subscribers should change the original Mobile Station International Subscriber Directory Numbers (MSISDNs) and notify their friends the new MSISDNs. Due to the effort of changing the MSISDNs, the subscribers may give up using the new services and lower service rates. The Number Portability (NP) service enables the subscribers to keep their original MSISDNs while changing their mobile operators. Thus, the NP service is very important in 4G/5G mobile communications. To provide the NP service for 4G/5G, this paper proposes the call routing mechanisms and the enhancement based on E.164 NUmber Mapping (ENUM) and the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) architecture.

TL;DR: This paper presents μvIMS, an architecture that uses microservices to provide finer-scalability and more effective resource usage than regular monolithic design, and can state that dividing the monolithic vIMS architecture in microservices allows providing finer-Scalability.
Abstract: The steps toward all over IP have defined to the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) as the de facto technology for end-to-end multimedia service provisioning in 5G. However, the unpredictable growth of users in 5G requires to improve IMS scalability to handle dynamic user traffic. Several works have addressed this issue by introducing auto-scaling mechanisms in virtualized IMS (vIMS) architectures. However, the current vIMS deployments use monolithic designs that do not allow finer-scalability. In this paper, we present μvIMS, an architecture that uses microservices to provide finer-scalability and more effective resource usage than regular monolithic design. To test our architecture, we evaluate μvIMS prototype regarding CPU usage, RAM usage, Successful Call Rate (SCR), and latency metrics. Our test results reveal that μvIMS achieves a higher SCR, using the available resources effectively with a negligible latency increasing. Thus, we can state that dividing the monolithic vIMS architecture in microservices allows providing finer-scalability.

Abstract: The fifth generation of mobile communications, promises to offer very high achievable data rate, very low latency, ultra-high reliability, along with supporting a wide range of new applications and use cases. In order to increase network scalability, service flexibility and to improve mobility management in 5g wireless networks, two new concepts have emerged, namely Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) and Software Defined Wireless Networking (SDWN). In this study, we designed and implemented a network architecture based on an open-source software-based LTE implementation named as OpenAirInterface (OAI). OAI emulation platform is an integrated tool allowing large-scale networking experimentation. The latter can be used for prototyping innovation scheduling algorithms, making the majority of new architecture. SDWN network technology has emerged in order to deliver a high quality multiple performance system with cost benefits that includes several processes such as live monitoring, reconfiguration, control delegation and faster data-transfer. In order to test some key enablers and features of 5G mobile networks, we provide a topology that combines SDWN and NFV technologies to handle the fulfilment of network slices by running Mosaic 5g FlexRAN software on top of the OAI platform. Moreover, Clearwater IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) is integrated to provide voice over IP (VoIP) service between subscribers and a Wi-Fi Access point (AP) is added to network in order to establish a heterogeneous wireless network (HetNet). Our results can serve as a reference for future optimization by the open source community.

TL;DR: A dual service discovery/exposure approach is proposed to reduce the gap between offered services and subscribers’ needs in an IMS context based on opinion mining related to Twitter trending topics in order to estimate the sensitivity of the target user to a service or another.
Abstract: Being one of the most solicited content (opinions) sharing platforms, Twitter is a granary of information serving as a base for our service discovery/exposure approach proposed in this paper. The growth of data caused by the internet growth has led to the birth of a growing number of services, making the task difficult for telecommunication operators in competition. In this paper, we propose a dual service discovery/exposure approach to reduce the gap between offered services and subscribers’ needs in an IMS context. This approach is based on opinion mining related to Twitter trending topics in order to estimate the sensitivity of the target user to a service or another. Compared to both the classic approach and the collaborative service discovery/exposure approach, our results show an improvement in the accuracy and error of the service targeting at the target user’s starting phase on the operator’s network.

TL;DR: This paper proposes a service exposure approach based on event prediction that is proactive and based on an online service recommendation implicitly initiated by the service requestor and is compared to the classic service Exposure approach and to the predictive collaborative service exposure approaches.
Abstract: Exposure of relevant services aligned with user’s needs is nowadays not only a guarantee of the latter's satisfaction but above all, a way for service providers to stand apart from competitors. In this context, the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), which is an implementation of the Next Generation Network (NGN) concept, aims to provide a seamless access to a rich and varied range of services regardless the access technology employed by the service requestor. Moreover, the multitude of existing services makes service exposure a challenging exercise. To meet this challenge, in this paper we propose a service exposure approach based on event prediction. Our approach is proactive and based on an online service recommendation implicitly initiated by the service requestor. Our work is compared to the classic service exposure approach and to the predictive collaborative service exposure approach we proposed in our previous work. The obtained results illustrate the good performance of our approach in terms of response time, CPU utilization, memory use; but poorer performance in terms of service targeting accuracy compared to the aforementioned approaches.

Abstract: In this era of mobile Internet, people can quickly and easily access multimedia services and applications through mobile phones. And multimedia services are ubiquitous in life, such as text, pictures, voice, and video, to convey and receive media that give people all kinds of information. In addition, with the rapid development of the Internet of Things, all the devices around the world have networking functions, so that people not only enjoy application services on mobile phones but also want to further develop with devices of our living environments. IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) is a platform that can integrate multimedia services. If people want to enjoy IMS services directly through peripheral devices (i.e., non-IMS devices), they must be authorized by IMS devices to be trusted devices. This paper is based on Gateway as a trusted intermediary role, connecting peripheral devices in the IMS network so that these non-IMS devices can also talk with the IMS device, so IMS users can also use his peripheral devices for IMS talk service.

TL;DR: This work describes an IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) architecture deployed in a containerized environment (dubbed cIMS), which represents a pivotal part of novel network architectures such as 5G and carries out an experimental assessment of a typical telecommunication network service satisfying a desired availability constraint.
Abstract: As of today, telecommunication providers are exploiting the possibilities offered by the cloud paradigm to efficiently decouple physical network resources, like hardware equipment, optical interfaces and cables, from offered services, for instance multimedia content delivery and data storage. Among technologies conceived to implement this paradigm, containerization stands out. It can be considered as an evolution of classic virtualization, where software instances called containers are designed to offer specific network functionalities by relying on a separate infrastructure composed of virtual machines and hardware. In line with this new trend, we characterize, from an availability viewpoint, an IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) architecture deployed in a containerized environment (dubbed cIMS), which represents a pivotal part of novel network architectures such as 5G. Firstly, we model the availability of cIMS by employing both Reliability Block Diagram (RBD), to capture logical dependencies among cIMS nodes, and Stochastic Reward Networks (SRN), to characterize individually the probabilistic behavior of each node. Then, also supported by an ad-hoc automated procedure, we carry out an experimental assessment of a typical telecommunication network service satisfying a desired availability constraint, whose results are some feasible cIMS configurations that can be deployed.

The major research issue in an integrated framework is to enable mobile users with fast and smooth connectivity while switching between heterogeneous access technologies. In this paper, an integration framework for Wireless Fidelity/Long-Term Evolution access technologies is presented with IP Multimedia Subsystem for service provisioning. An inter-domain handoff scheme called SIP advanced handoff is proposed which utilizes improved Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) and Mobile IPv6 with a multilayer approach which enables fast and smooth connectivity with minimized handoff latency and improved throughput. A simulation is carried out using NS2, and the performance characteristics are studied. TL;DR: A combined architecture model is proposed that performs flow processing using the SDN architecture and OpenFlow via the IMS based signaling platform that supports network slicing through theSDN architecture, which satisfies the broad service requirements of mobile networks.
Abstract: As the essential technology to realize the open business communication network, the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) is a necessary condition to enhance the mobile internet experience of users. However, with the continuous progress of communication technology, the existing architecture of the IMS has been unable to meet the needs of business development. To better solve these problems, we introduce the concept of Software Defined Network (SDN). SDN is a logically centralized control network architecture. One of SDN mechanisms is OpenFlow, and it is responsible for managing the network resources by using the remote SDN Controller. We argue for network slicing as an efficient solution that reasonably allocates resources by splitting a single physical infrastructure into multiple network resources for various users. Moreover, the SDN architecture provides tools to support network slicing. In this article, we propose and construct a combined architecture model that performs flow processing using the SDN architecture and OpenFlow via the IMS based signaling platform. It not only makes full use of the remote controller to dynamically manage network resources but also supports network slicing through the SDN architecture, which satisfies the broad service requirements of mobile networks. Besides, based on the proposed architecture, we carried out some tentative experiments and described them in detail.
