TL;DR: In this article, the authors evaluate the availability of multi-tenant SFC infrastructures, where every network function is modeled as a multi-state system and is shared among different and independent tenants.
Abstract: The Network Function Virtualization (NFV) paradigm has been devised as an enabler of next generation network infrastructures by speeding up the provisioning and the composition of novel network services. The latter are implemented via a chain of virtualized network functions, a process known as Service Function Chaining. In this paper, we evaluate the availability of multi-tenant SFC infrastructures, where every network function is modeled as a multi-state system and is shared among different and independent tenants. To this aim, we propose a Universal Generating Function (UGF) approach, suitably extended to handle performance vectors, that we call Multidimensional UGF. This novel methodology is validated in a realistic multi-tenant telecommunication network scenario, where the service chain is composed by the network elements of an IP Multimedia Subsystem implemented via NFV. A steady-state availability evaluation of such an exemplary system is presented and a redundancy optimization problem is solved, so providing the SFC infrastructure which minimizes deployment cost while respecting a given availability requirement.

TL;DR: In this article, a joint analysis of availability and performance of IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) is presented, where the authors consider the failure of a single network element composing a Service Function Chain (SFC) unavoidably leads to some degradation in terms of availability (ability of guaranteeing working conditions), and/or performance for the whole SFC.
Abstract: The failure of a single network element composing a Service Function Chain (SFC) unavoidably leads to some degradation in terms of availability (ability of guaranteeing working conditions), and/or performance (ability of sustaining a certain workload) for the whole SFC. By considering both of these aspects, we propose, as a case study, a joint analysis of availability and performance (a.k.a. performability) of IP Multimedia Subsystem, an SFC infrastructure which plays a key role in the all-IP convergence of telecommunication services, especially as per prospects of $5{G}$ . We refer to an implementation of IMS based on container technology (containerized IMS, or cIMS) which allows to decouple the application layer from the underlying hardware infrastructure more efficiently than classic virtualization schemes. We model the probabilistic behavior of a cIMS by means of Stochastic Reward Networks (SRN) and Reliability Block Diagram (RBD) formalisms to take into account failure and repair events. Then, with the assistance of a designed-from-scratch algorithm (OptChains+), we carry on a performability analysis: i) to evaluate and compare series/parallel cIMS configurations (or settings), and ii) to find settings with minimum cost and maximum availability, given a performance level. The proposed assessment lends itself to a sensitivity analysis, here demonstrated by examples, useful for robustness evaluation.

TL;DR: In this article, an intelligent intrusion detection system for the security IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) based on machine learning technology is proposed for the Netflix service company, which increased the number of new subscribers during the Coronavirus pandemic age.
Abstract: The multimedia service company, Netflix, increased the number of new subscribers during the Coronavirus pandemic age. Intrusion detection systems for multimedia platforms can prevent the platform from network attacks. An intelligent intrusion detection system is proposed for the security IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) based on machine learning technology. For increasing the accuracy of the classifiers, it is vital to select the critical features to construct the intrusion detection system. Two-class classifiers, including the Decision Tree, Support Vector Machine, and Naive Bayesian, are selected to evaluate intrusion detection accuracy. According to the three classifiers' accuracy values, the most critical features are selected based on the features' ranking orders. Six critical features are selected:Service, dst_host_same_srv_rate, Flag, Protocol Type, Dst_host_rerror_rate, and Count. Numerical comparison with state_of_the_art shows that critical features improve intrusion detection accuracy, which can be better than the deep learning method.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a healthcare system using IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) which can help doctors to monitor patient's health from anywhere using event-based Session Initiation Protocol (SIP).
Abstract: Internet of Things (IoT) can be employed in various applications like agriculture, disaster relief operations, smart and connected health care, this paper presents a healthcare system using IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) which can help doctors to monitor patient’s health from anywhere. IMS is the key idea of Next Generation Networks (NGNs) and integrated network of telecommunications that utilizes Internet Protocol (IP) for packet communications. Event-based Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) for Instant Messaging and Presence Leveraging Extensions (SIMPLE) architecture is the best solution for IMS-based systems. SIP protocol is used to communicate with IMS core and data is transmitted inside SIP messages. In this manner, there is no requirement for extra transport protocol. The proposed system can generate automatic alerts by sending calls and messages to various stakeholders like healthcare organization, family members, etc. in emergency situations. IMS client has been implemented using Nubomedia IMS connector which is customized to read and interpret data. The existing IMS clients like UCT and Boghe can’t read different files thereby prohibiting various forms of analysis and data manipulation. A rule-based interpretation of data is then done to trigger messages to the doctors if the values observed are above certain threshold. The developed system can be useful for monitoring patient’s health by collecting health data through smart watches, apps and sensors. The designed IMS platform can be extended to contribute in numerous fields like disaster management, healthcare system, emergency ambulance call setup by reading live data streams, monitoring and issuing notifications.

TL;DR: A stochastic assessment of a softwarized IMS (softIMS) architecture is performed, able to characterize the behavior of softIMS in terms of failure/repair events, and to derive a set of optimal configurations satisfying a given availability requirement while minimizing deployment costs.
Abstract: Service provisioning mechanisms implemented across 5G infrastructures take broadly into use the network service chain concept. Typically, it is coupled with Network Function Virtualization (NFV) paradigm, and consists in defining a pre-determined path traversed by a set of softwarized network nodes to provide specific services. A well known chain-like framework is the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), a key infrastructure of 5G networks, that we characterize both by a performance and an availability perspective. Precisely, supported by a designed from scratch testbed realized through Clearwater platform, we perform a stochastic assessment of a softwarized IMS (softIMS) architecture where two main stages stand out: i) a performance analysis, where, exploiting the queueing network decomposition method, we formalize an optimization problem of resource allocation by modeling each softIMS node as an M/G/c system; ii) an availability assessment, where, adopting the Stochastic Reward Net methodology, we are able to characterize the behavior of softIMS in terms of failure/repair events, and to derive a set of optimal configurations satisfying a given availability requirement (e.g. five nines) while minimizing deployment costs. Two routines dubbed OptCNT and OptSearchChain have been devised to govern the performance and availability analyses, respectively.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors propose HASFC, a framework designed to support, through a dedicated REST interface, the MANO infrastructure in deploying SFCs with an optimal availability/cost trade-off.
Abstract: Most softwarized telco services are conveniently framed as service function chains (SFCs). Indeed, being structured as a combination of interconnected nodes, service chains may suffer from the single point of failure problem, meaning that an individual node malfunctioning could compromise the whole chain operation. To guarantee highly available (HA) levels, service providers are required to introduce redundancy strategies to achieve specific availability demands, where cost constraints have to be taken into account as well. Along these lines we propose HASFC, a framework designed to support, through a dedicated REST interface, the MANO infrastructure in deploying SFCs with an optimal availability/cost trade-off. Our framework is equipped with: an availability model builder aimed to construct probabilistic models of the SFC nodes in terms of failure/repair actions; and a chaining and selection module to compose the possible redundant SFCs, and extract the best candidates thereof. Beyond providing architectural details, we demonstrate the functionalities of HASFC through a use case that considers the IP Multimedia Subsystem, an SFC-like structure adopted to manage multimedia contents within 4G/5G networks.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors propose an approach that generates generic workload models, independent of user behavior and the applications running in the system, and can fit any workload domain and type, with high degree of fidelity with respect to observed data within a short execution time.
Abstract: Workload models are typically built based on user and application behavior in a system, limiting them to specific domains. Undoubtedly, such a practice creates a dilemma in a cloud computing (cloud) environment, where a wide range of heterogeneous applications are running and many users have access to these resources. The workload model in such an infrastructure must adapt to the evolution of the system configuration parameters, such as job load fluctuation. The aim of this work is to propose an approach that generates generic workload models (1) which are independent of user behavior and the applications running in the system, and can fit any workload domain and type, (2) model sharp workload variations that are most likely to appear in cloud environments, and (3) with high degree of fidelity with respect to observed data, within a short execution time. We propose two approaches for workload estimation, the first being a Hull-White and Genetic Algorithm (GA) combination, while the second is a Support Vector Regression (SVR) and Kalman-filter combination. Thorough experiments are conducted on real CPU and throughput datasets from virtualized IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), Web and cloud environments to study the efficiency of both propositions. The results show a higher accuracy for the Hull-White-GA approach with marginal overhead over the SVR-Kalman-Filter combination.

TL;DR: The experimental results from their application to a real-world virtual IP Multimedia Subsystem (vIMS) use case show that the self-modeling and the active diagnosis procedures are effective in determining the root cause(s) of a failure and explaining fault propagation.
Abstract: The 5G system should be flexible to cope with diversity of functions and infrastructure, in an efficient way while supporting a wide range of services associated with a set of requirements through Service Function Chaining (SFC). Fault management plays a paramount role to fulfill the SFC requirements towards reliability of telecommunication networks. Model-based (MB) approaches are knowledge-based systems that reason about a system from an explicit representation of its structure and functional behavior through a dependency model. MB techniques solve novel diagnosis problems and provide explanations for their decisions. However, current MB methods suffer from some limitations due to network virtualization challenges: lack of network visibility and dynamic topologies. To tackle those limitations, we propose a self-modeling approach and an active diagnosis process for virtual networks that considers two types of knowledge to build the model: acquired knowledge and learned knowledge provided by fault injection to expand and validate the proposed model. The experimental results from their application to a real-world virtual IP Multimedia Subsystem (vIMS) use case show that the self-modeling and the active diagnosis procedures are effective in determining the root cause(s) of a failure and explaining fault propagation.

Abstract: To solve the problems of LEO (Low Earth Orbit) satellite network, such as insufficient flexibility and low resource utilization, an architecture using network slicing technology is proposed. Then a prototype system based on the Docker platform and DTN (Delay Tolerant Network) is implemented, providing IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) network slice, Internet of Things network slice and web network slice. Tested by prototype system, the results show that each network slice can independently provide relevant service without affecting each other, and can be allocated network resources flexibly according to the performance requirements of the services. The architecture can effectively improve the flexibility of the core network of LEO satellite network.

TL;DR: This paper presents an evaluation of IMS and Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) performance metrics and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and articulates a proposed study that will seek to address some of the challenges identified.
Abstract: Mission-critical Communication Systems that are adaptable for use with the latest generation of multimedia services are crucial for system users. To determine the set of requirements that need to be hardcoded into such systems, a clear distinction between mission-critical and non-mission-critical systems is required. Moreover, the users of services provided by such systems are very different to those of current mobile commercial communication systems. These differences give rise to a set of challenges that need addressing to facilitate migration from existing systems to those now being proposed. One such challenge relates to the performance of the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) registration process. This is a crucial consideration for mission-critical systems, particularly in large-scale systems where thousands or even millions of users may seek to access the system in disaster scenarios. This paper presents an evaluation of IMS and Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) performance metrics and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). Moreover, it articulates a proposed study that will seek to address some of the challenges identified.

Abstract: This paper synthetically presents the SYRROCA (SYstem Radiography and ROot Cause Analysis) network automation framework at the state of the art, and details its experimental platform sufficiently enough to understand its technical demonstration. The framework aims to learn nominal operating conditions of a softwarized network service and characterize anomalies in real-time, while offering a compact system state representation called radiography. This representation can provide to operational teams with a real-time insight on anomalies at physical and virtualized layers. The related technical demonstration showcases how SYRROCA can detect real-time anomalies of different nature on a containerized vIMS (virtual IP Multimedia Subsystem) service managed by Kubernetes.
