TL;DR: A new architecture for broadband 802.11 networks to support distributed multimedia applications is proposed, disabling the dynamic rate shifting mechanism and using a performance enhancing proxy.
Abstract: Wireless networks have become increasingly popular for the past few years, especially IEEE 802.11 as the most widespread wireless technology. This article proposes a new architecture for broadband 802.11 networks to support distributed multimedia applications. After discussing the differences between multimedia and traditional applications, we show how the 802.11b mechanism ensuring enhanced robustness connectivity for low signal to noise ratio (SNR) areas, penalizes multimedia stream transmissions. A new multimedia architecture disabling the dynamic rate shifting mechanism and using a performance enhancing proxy is then proposed.

TL;DR: This paper describes a partial system prototype which capitalizes upon traditional features of grid computing like providing access to heterogeneous resources and services of different administrative domains in a transparent and secure way and takes advantage of recent proposals by the Global Grid Forum.
Abstract: Next generation e-learning platforms will support cooperative use of geographically distributed educational resources as an aggregated environment, thus enabling a more effective knowledge exchange. Sharing this goal, our research activity addresses the definition and implementation of a service-based infrastructure for content distribution and multimedia streaming. The proposed architecture provides enough flexibility, extensibility, and scalability to cope with the ever-increasing heterogeneity and mobility of edge devices. In this paper, we initially illustrate the general objectives and requirements in the development of an e-learning oriented application for multimedia content discovery, access, and distribution in a virtual community. Architectural considerations have motivated the use of Grid technologies as they provide access to resources and services of different administrative domains in a transparent, seamless, and secure way. The Grid-based architecture has been endowed with a number of services including discovery and streaming of multimedia objects, multimedia content update, quality of service (QoS) management, and support for user authentication and authorization. A multimedia application based on the architecture is described and evaluated on a multi-domain network. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

TL;DR: This paper proposes an architecture for deploying IPTV & VoD as services on an IMS based network and analyzes the short-comings in the IMS specifications and steps taken by standards bodies to address them.
Abstract: IPTV and video on demand (VoD) services are becoming means for traditional service providers to fight back against the competition from cable companies Many of the large service providers are deploying networks and delivery infrastructure to deliver IPTV and VoD on IP based networks At the same time, they are looking at the possibility of migrating their traditional PSTN networks towards IMS Given that the two events happening almost at the same time, service providers will need to consider the possibility that IPTV+VoD services could be delivered over IMS network to prevent IPTV+VoD as another service capability of an IMS network This paper proposes an architecture for deploying IPTV & VoD as services on an IMS based network It analyzes the short-comings in the IMS specifications and steps taken by standards bodies to address them

TL;DR: In this article, a business system consisting of the IP multi-media sub-system and videophone pass-card VPP business platform is proposed, which offers a forward active inquire mechanism against the strange calling and asks GP to record and send video ID recognition info.
Abstract: The business-customized user is as a called party (DP). When DP receives the call access request from the calling party (GP), he asks via business platform GP sending a Video Message (VM) to indicate his ID. According to VM, DP selects whether to answer this call or not. This completes the ID attestation. In case DP cannot be reached or a busy tone is returned, VM recorded by GP is sent to DP's Mail Box as a Video Mail for future read. This business system consists of the IP multi-media sub-system and videophone pass-card VPP business platform. This platform includes the application server AS, the media resource function server MRF, the media resource server, the database server and the gate net station Portal. The invention offers a forward active inquire mechanism against the strange calling and asks GP to record and send video ID recognition info. According to the Video Message, the called party selects whether to answer this call or not so as to prevent annoy calls effectively.
