TL;DR: This article summarizes the architectural aspects of a next-generation network in terms of general principles, functional representation, and typical implementation for session-based services.
Abstract: This article summarizes the architectural aspects of a next-generation network in terms of general principles, functional representation, and typical implementation. According to the general reference model, which assumes decoupling of services and transport, NGN can be represented by multiple functional groups. One of the key implementations for session-based services, utilizing an IP multimedia subsystem, is introduced with enhanced features to meet both fixed and mobile network requirements.

TL;DR: In this paper, a method for accessing a private IP network with a wireless host by way of a wireless access network is presented, where the wireless host becomes a virtual host of the IP network.
Abstract: A method, and associated apparatus, for accessing a private IP network with a wireless host by way of a wireless access network. Once authenticated and permitted access to the private IP network, the wireless host becomes a virtual host of the private IP network. A wireless host identifier (WHI) is used to identify the wireless host. Permission to communicate by way of wireless access network is confirmed by an authentication procedure. The WHI is thereafter provided to the private IP network. If the WHI is of a selected value, permission to access the private IP network is granted. An IP address used to address data to the wireless host is allocated by the private IP network once access to the private IP network is granted.

TL;DR: In this paper, a universal multimedia access apparatus for accessing any of a plurality of multimedia applications provided by a multimedia network is proposed, consisting of a transceiver and a processing unit.
Abstract: A universal multimedia access apparatus for accessing any of a plurality of multimedia applications provided by a multimedia network. The universal multimedia access apparatus accesses a predetermined one of the plurality of multimedia applications using an application-specific module interfaced thereto, the application-specific module being selected from a plurality of application-specific modules. The universal multimedia access apparatus comprises a transceiver and a processing unit. The transceiver communicates multimedia information between the multimedia network and the application-specific module, and communicates with the multimedia network in any one of a plurality of communication modes. The processing unit is operative to identify the application-specific module interfaced thereto and the predetermined one of the plurality of multimedia applications associated with the application-specific module, and operative to command the transceiver to communicate with the multimedia network in a mode associated with the predetermined one of the plurality of multimedia applications.

TL;DR: In this paper, an IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) proxy adjunct is implemented to make extensions to messages according to any protocol providing a session description protocol (SDP) component, such as SIP or RTSP, so as to ensure the selected QoS.
Abstract: A user equipment (UE) device (11) including a mobile terminal (MT) (11b 11b') coupled to a terminal equipment (TE) device (11a) including an IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) proxy adjunct (P+) for use by the TE (11a) in making multimedia service requests for IP communications with a desired end-to-end QoS, the end-to-end including the local connection and a network supporting QoS, e.g. an UMTS network (12) having as an extension of its packet-switched core network (12b) an IMS (12c) providing multimedia services with selected QoS. The IMS proxy adjunct (P+) is implemented to make extensions to messages according to any protocol providing a session description protocol (SDP) component, such as SIP or RTSP, so as to ensure the selected QoS. In addition, a mechanism is provided by which the MT (11b') informs the IMS (12c) when it has IMS proxy capabilities.
