Abstract: Recently, iron oxide nanoparticles (NPs) have attracted much consideration due to their unique properties, such as superparamagnetism, surface-to-volume ratio, greater surface area, and easy separation methodology. Various physical, chemical, and biological methods have been adopted to synthesize magnetic NPs with suitable surface chemistry. This review summarizes the methods for the preparation of iron oxide NPs, size and morphology control, and magnetic properties with recent bioengineering, commercial, and industrial applications. Iron oxides exhibit great potential in the fields of life sciences such as biomedicine, agriculture, and environment. Nontoxic conduct and biocompatible applications of magnetic NPs can be enriched further by special surface coating with organic or inorganic molecules, including surfactants, drugs, proteins, starches, enzymes, antibodies, nucleotides, nonionic detergents, and polyelectrolytes. Magnetic NPs can also be directed to an organ, tissue, or tumor using an external magnetic field for hyperthermic treatment of patients. Keeping in mind the current interest in iron NPs, this review is designed to report recent information from synthesis to characterization, and applications of iron NPs.

Abstract: Revved-up rust! Light-induced water splitting over iron oxide (hematite) has been achieved by using a particle-assisted deposition technique and IrO2-based surface catalysis. Photocurrents in excess of 3 mA cm-2 were obtained at +1.23 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode under AM 1.5 G 100 mW cm-2 simulated sunlight. Abstract: This research describes the heterogeneous catalytic reactions of H2O2 with granular size goethite (α-FeOOH) particles in aqueous solution under various experimental conditions. This is an important reaction for the environment since both H2O2 and iron oxides are common constituents of natural and atmospheric waters. Furthermore, iron oxides function as catalysts in chemical oxidation processes used for treatment of contaminated waters with H2O2. The results of this study demonstrated that the decomposition rate of H2O2 over goethite surface can be described by the second-order kinetic expression −d[H2O2]/dt = k[FeOOH][H2O2], where k = 0.031 M-1 s-1, at pH 7 in the absence of any inorganic or organic chemical species. The apparent reaction rate was dominated by the intrinsic reaction rates on the oxide surfaces rather than the mass transfer rate of H2O2 to the surface. Abstract: Thin films grown by pulsed-laser deposition from targets of Sn0.95Fe0.05O2 are transparent ferromagnets with Curie temperature and spontaneous magnetization of 610 K and 2.2 A m2 kg−1, respectively. The 57Fe Mossbauer spectra show the iron is all high-spin Fe3+ but the films are magnetically inhomogeneous on an atomic scale, with only 23% of the iron ordering magnetically. The net ferromagnetic moment per ordered iron ion, 1.8 μB, is greater than for any simple iron oxide with superexchange interactions. Ferromagnetic coupling of ferric ions via an electron trapped in a bridging oxygen vacancy (F center) is proposed to explain the high Curie temperature.

Abstract: We report on the use of dopamine (DA) as a robust molecular anchor to link functional molecules to the iron oxide shell of magnetic nanoparticles. Using nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA) as the functional molecule, we created a system with an M/Fe2O3-DA-NTA (M = Co or SmCo5.2) nanostructure, which possesses high stability and specificity for separating histidine-tagged proteins. The well-established biocompatibility of iron oxide and the robust covalent bonds between DA and Fe2O3 render this strategy attractive for constructing biofunctional magnetic nanoparticles containing iron oxide.
