29 Sep 1997TL;DR: An isolated flyback secondary inductor converter (IFSIC) as mentioned in this paper is a type of converter that uses a transformer with a primary winding for receiving electrical energy from a source of electrical power and a secondary winding coupled to the primary winding.
Abstract: An isolated flyback secondary inductor converter (IFSIC) and method of operation thereof. The IFSIC has a transformer with a primary winding for receiving electrical energy from a source of electrical power and a secondary winding coupled to the primary winding. The IFSIC also has a switch for intermittently coupling the transformer to the source of electrical power. The IFSIC includes a series-coupled inductor and diode coupled in parallel with the secondary winding to provide a path for the energy from the transformer when the transistor is ON, allowing the energy to be stored in the inductor rather than in the transformer.

TL;DR: In this paper, double pancake windings with BSCCO-2223 HTS tape and GFRP cryostat with room temperature bore are used in a 10 kVA single phase HTS transformer.
Abstract: This paper describes the construction and test results of a 10 kVA single phase HTS transformer. Double pancake windings with BSCCO-2223 HTS tape and GFRP cryostat with room temperature bore are used in the transformer. Two double pancake windings are connected in series to provide 94/spl times/2 turns and two double pancake windings are connected in parallel to conduct the secondary current of 45.4 A. Coefficients of the constructed transformer are obtained using fundamental tests of the transformer. According to the test results, a slightly larger leakage reactance than expected is observed due to the bulky core which surrounded the cryostat.

TL;DR: In this article, a 3-phase isolation transformer is used to create a three-phase rotating field from the output of a source inverter, and an inductive filter turns that output into three sine waves.
Abstract: Systems and methods for managing interaction between inverter-based DC and other power systems are disclosed. In one embodiment, a 3-phase isolation transformer is fluxed to create a 3-phase rotating field from the output of a source inverter. An inductive filter turns that output into three sine waves. A secondary inverter regenerates the system, sometimes after the isolation transformer is fluxed, and by advancing or retarding the secondary inverter's phase, current (and, thus, the DC voltage and power direction) is controlled. In another embodiment, an inverter is supplied by a DC source. The inverter is controlled to match its output voltage, current, and phase to a live AC grid, then the two are connected. The inverter frequency is then driven to advance the phase of the inverter in relation to the grid. Alternatively, the inverter voltage is then driven at a level greater than that of the grid.

TL;DR: In this paper, a simple U-shaped transformer is constructed from a single unitary tubular member arranged into a U-shape configuration with a pair of spaced sets of openings therein for the purpose of allowing efficient threading of a secondary winding.
Abstract: Especially simple structure for an electrical transformer device provides cost effective fabrication thereof and offers improved operating performance particularly in a radio transmitter circuit for coupling high levels of radio frequency energy from the output of a radio frequency amplifier to an antenna system. One winding of the transformer is formed from a single, unitary, tubular member arranged into a U-shaped configuration which includes a pair of spaced sets of openings therein for the two-fold purpose of allowing efficient threading of a secondary winding therewithin and to improve air cooling characteristics of the device. A second winding comprises a wire passed through the interior of the tubular member, and a number of cylindrically shaped magnetic elements are sleeved over the tubular member to enhance the mutual inductive coupling between the windings. A circuit board having a cut-out zone therethrough is especially adapted to have the transformer device mounted thereon in an essentially flat position juxtaposed over the cut-out zone to provide maximum convection and conduction cooling of the transformer and thereby significantly increase the power handling capabilities of the device.

TL;DR: In this paper, single-stage switched AC/DC converters are provided with a PFC (power factor correction) lead enhanced by inclusion of a saturable reactor and/or by connecting the PFC lead to an intermediate tap in a primary winding of the customary isolation transformer located in the DC/DC conversion part of the converter.
Abstract: Single-stage switched AC/DC converters are provided with a PFC (power factor correction) lead enhanced by inclusion of a saturable reactor and/or by connecting the PFC lead to an intermediate tap in a primary winding of the customary isolation transformer located in the DC/DC conversion part of the converter. An important resulting improvement is reduction in the voltage stress on the energy-storage (or "bulk") capacitor. Included are various circuit arrangements of resetting the saturable inductor, for designer or user selection.
