01 Jan 1981TL;DR: In this paper, the joint, marginal, and conditional distributions arising out of (X, Z) are derived via probability generating function techniques, and several ad hoc estimation techniques are discussed.
Abstract: A discrete r.v. X is generalized (compounded) by another discrete r.v. Zi to yield the compound distribution of Z = Z1+ … + ZX. Distributional properties are given concerning the bivariate structure of X and Z. The joint, marginal, and conditional distributions arising out of (X, Z) are derived via probability generating function techniques. Special attention is given to power series distributions (PSD), in particular when Z is a compound Poisson. Recurrences for joint probabilities and cumulants are indicated. Several ad hoc estimation techniques are discussed.

08 Aug 1994TL;DR: In this article, the order parameter of the K distribution of agricultural targets in low-resolution AirSAR polarimetric data has been investigated and the results indicate that five parameters are sufficient to describe distributed agricultural targets at higher frequencies, but an extra parameter is available at lower frequencies.
Abstract: Agricultural areas in low resolution AirSAR polarimetric data exhibit K distributed statistics. The order parameter of the K distribution shows considerable variation with frequency and vegetation type. At C-band, all vegetation types give large order parameters, so that they are essentially gaussian, but order parameters decrease with frequency, markedly so for cereal crops. Coniferous woodland is gaussian at all frequencies. Root crops show intermediate behaviour, being better fitted by K distributions whose order parameters are not as low as those of cereals. These results indicate that five parameters are sufficient to describe distributed agricultural targets at higher frequencies, but an extra parameter is available at lower frequencies. >

23 May 2006TL;DR: In this paper, the sensitivity of the generalized K-distribution as descriptors of dark features over marine single-look SAR images is investigated, and the working hypothesis is that the generalized k-dist distribution is a suitable speckle model for marine SAR images ensuring a continuous and physically consistent transition among different scattering scenarios.
Abstract: In this paper, the sensitivity of the three parameters generalized K-distribution, as descriptors of dark features over marine single-look SAR images, is investigated. The working hypothesis is that the generalized K-distribution, which is a three parameters probability density function (pdf), is a suitable speckle model for marine SAR images ensuring a continuous and physically consistent transition among different scattering scenarios. This speckle model can embody the Rayleigh case (which is descriptor of land areas, i.e. islands), the Rice case (which is descriptor of areas in which is present a dominant scatterer, i.e. ships) and the K distribution (which is descriptor of oil free areas). The reference data set is provided by the ESA under the CAT-1 Project C1P-2769.

TL;DR: In this paper, a new family of continuous probability distributions based on the Whittaker functions which include the product of some well known continuous distributions is derived. But the new distribution is unimodal, skewed to the right and carries most of the properties of skewed distributions.
Abstract: This paper derives a new family of continuous probability distribution based on the Whittaker functions which include the product of some well known continuous distributions. We have also defined a class of continuous probability distributions based on the generalized Pearson differential equation which follows as a special case of our general results. Some characteristics of the new distribution are defined. It is observed that the new distribution is unimodal, skewed to the right and carries most of the properties of skewed distributions. It is hoped that the findings of the paper will be useful for researchers in different fields like environmental science, life testing, reliability theory, traffic data, among others.
