Abstract: Chemical composition of the proximal tibial articular cartilage and growth plate of broiler chickens from seven age groups (1, 8, 14, 22, 29, 36, and 43 d old) was studied. In the articular cartilage, the contents of dry matter, collagen measured as hydroxyproline, and keratan sulfate increased (P 0.05) among the age groups. In the growth plate, the contents of chondroitin sulfate and keratan sulfate increased (P < 0.05) with age, while the contents of dry matter, sialic acid, and collagen were similar among the age groups. The proportion of hyaluronic acid in total GAG decreased at the age of 8 d, and remained relatively constant thereafter. Abstract: The large aggregating cartilage proteoglycans can be detected immunologically using antibodies directed against the hyaluronic acid-binding region, core protein, keratan sulfate, chondroitin sulfate, and hyaluronic acid. With radioimmunoassays we have detected proteoglycans released from adult human articular cartilage in vitro and in vivo. In vitro cleavage appears to occur mainly adjacent to the hyaluronic acid binding region with the release of the rest of the molecule. Two distinct populations have been observed, the larger of which is chondroitin sulfate-rich and the smaller keratan sulfate-rich. Although they are a little smaller and probably aggregate less with hyaluronic acid, these populations correspond in size and composition to two similar populations detected in situ in healthy adult human articular cartilage. Abstract: In the present study, inhibitory effects of several sulfated and nonsulfated glycoconjugates were evaluated on the in vitro asexual growth of Babesia bovis. Among the selected sulfated glycoconjugates, dextran sulfate, heparin, heparan sulfate, fucoidan, and chondroitin sulfate B strongly inhibited the parasitic growth, and all but chondroitin sulfate B induced a significant accumulation of extracellular merozoites in culture. In contrast, chondroitin sulfate A, keratan sulfate, and protamine sulfate, as well as nonsulfated dextran and hyaluronic acid, did not influence the growth. These findings indicate that the asexual growth of B. bovis merozoites is inhibited by specific sulfated glycoconjugates, possibly providing us with an important insight into the molecular interaction(or interactions) during the process of the erythrocyte invasion by B. bovis merozoites.

Abstract: This study aimed to evaluate a system that identifies cartilage turn over and/or degradation through measurement of a new keratan sulfate (KS) epitope concentration in equine sera. Blood samples were collected from 30 horses, 1 (n = 15) and 2 year-olds (n = 15). Serum samples were analyzed for an epitope of keratan sulfate by 1/20/5D4 (KS5D4) and new epitopes of keratan sulfate using high sensitive keratan sulfate (HSKS), measured by two respective enzyme-linked immunosorbant assays (ELISAs). There was no correlation in serum concentration of KS evaluated using 5D4 and HSKS. Age had no significant effect on concentrations of KS measured with KS5D4 while 1 year-old horses showed significantly higher amounts than 2 year-olds with HSKS. Results suggest that HSKS could detect early signs of cartilage metabolic changes.
