Abstract: A method and system for keying media allows for the distribution of updateable content to an end user. The media are any type of processor readable, portable apparatus containing a preinstalled Keying Application and unique Source ID. A particular medium is provided to an end user and the end user runs the Keying Application on a network-connected electronic device, such as a computer or PDA. The Keying Application interacts with a Content Server via the network connection. The end user also interacts with the Content Server via the Keying Application. Through these interactions, the Content Server distributes specific updateable content to the Keying Application, which displays the specific content to the end user. The content may comprise catalog and directory information.

Abstract: This paper presents a prototype of an automatic digital modulation classifier based on a real-time spectrum analyzer (RTSA) architecture. The modulation classifier is suitable for efficient spectrum monitoring to identify the signals present in a certain frequency band, without the need of knowing any parameter about them. The realized prototype is able to recognize classical single-carrier modulations such as M-ary phase-shift keying (PSK), M-ary frequency-shift keying (FSK), M-ary amplitude-shift keying (ASK), and M-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM), as well as orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) modulations such as the discrete multitone (DMT). To evaluate the performance of the prototype, several experiments with actual signals have been carried out in different operating conditions by varying the values of both the main modulation parameters and the signal-to-noise ratio.

Abstract: We demonstrate the codesign and cointegration of an ultracompact silicon photonic receiver and a low-power-consumption (155 mW/channel) two-channel linear transimpedance amplifier array. Operation below the forward error coding (FEC) threshold both for quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) and 16-quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) at 28 Gbaud is demonstrated.

Abstract: We analyze the performance of on-off keying (OOK) and its restricted version pulse position modulation (PPM) over a lossy narrowband optical channel under the constraint of a low average photon number, when direct detection is used at the output. An analytical approximation for the maximum PPM transmission rate is derived, quantifying the effects of photon statistics on the communication efficiency in terms of the g(2) second-order intensity correlation function of the light source. Enhancement attainable through the use of sub-Poissonian light is discussed.

Abstract: The performance of a local/mobile radio communications system utilizing the slotted ALOHA multiple random access protocol is analyzed. The probability of correct packet capture is evaluated for a local/mobile packet radio system using ideal coherent binary phase-shift keying (BPSK) modulation. Both the near/far effect and the effect of Rayleigh fading on the probability of correct packet capture are taken into account, but the effect of thermal noise is neglected since the interference due to competing packets is dominant in practical systems. The probability of correct packet reception is evaluated for a system using spatial diversity. In addition, the effect on system performance of either convolutional coding with hard decision Viterbi decoding or binary linear block coding with hard decision decoding is evaluated. The pseudo-Bayesian algorithm that has been developed to stabilize a packet system based on the slotted ALOHA protocol at maximum channel throughput is found to be adaptable to the local mobile operating environment. For the system considered here, channel throughputs as high as 0.66 can be obtained. >
