TL;DR: The CLASSIC system explores the expressiveness vs. tractability tradeoff, driven by concerns of usefulness and usability in several real applications and embodies the views of what a knowledge representation system should be.
Abstract: Our work on the CLASSIC knowledge representation system covers a broad range from theory to practice. While CLASSIC was implemented primarily to provide a simple, easy to learn and use, locally available tool for a relatively limited set of applications, it has a substantial theoretical foundation, based on a formal "terminological" logic. The logical foundation provides the semantics of a term description language, which is used to define structured concepts and make assertions about individuals in a knowledge base. These concepts and individuals are organized into a generalization hierarchy by classification and subsumption algorithms. The CLASSIC system explores the expressiveness vs. tractability tradeoff, driven by concerns of usefulness and usability in several real applications. Within this context, it embodies our views of what a knowledge representation system should

TL;DR: It is claimed that research on cognitive architectures is an important path to the development of general intelligent systems and the high-level programming language that embodies these commitments is ICARUS.
Abstract: In this article, I claim that research on cognitive architectures is an important path to the development of general intelligent systems. I contrast this paradigm with other approaches to constructing such systems, and I review the theoretical commitments associated with a cognitive architecture. I illustrate these ideas using a particular architecture--ICARUS---by examining its claims about memories, about the representation and organization of knowledge, and about the performance and learning mechanisms that affect memory structures. I also consider the high-level programming language that embodies these commitments, drawing examples from the domain of in-city driving. In closing, I consider ICARUS'S relation to other cognitive architectures and discuss some open issues that deserve increased attention.

TL;DR: The authors discuss: taxonomies; information sources; future issues; business viewpoints; the e-marketplace; and B2B e-commerce standardisation and integration.
Abstract: Ontologies are the first step toward realizing the full power of online e-commerce. Ontologies enable machine-understandable semantics of data, and building this data infrastructure will enable completely new kinds of automated services. Software agents can search for products, form buyer and seller coalitions, negotiate about products, or help automatically configure products and services according to specified user requirements. The combination of machine-processable semantics of data based on ontologies and the development of many specialized reasoning services will bring the Web to its full power. The authors discuss: taxonomies; information sources; future issues; business viewpoints; the e-marketplace; and B2B e-commerce standardisation and integration.

TL;DR: Preliminary experimental results reveal that the proposed type abstraction hierarchy provides an organized structure representing concepts at different knowledge levels in various domains, and provides a systematic and efficient method for cooperative query answering.
Abstract: This paper proposes the use of a type abstraction hierarchy as a framework for deriving cooperative query answers. The type abstraction hierarchy integrates the abstraction view with the subsumption (is-a) and composition (part-of) views of a type hierarchy. Such a framework provides multilevel object representation, which is an important aspect of cooperative query answering. The concept of pattern that specifies one or more conditions on an object is also proposed. Patterns have smaller granularity than types, and thus provide more specific semantic information. Cooperative query answering consists of query relaxation, generalization, specialization, and association on patterns. Query relaxation can be explicitly specified by the user or implicitly performed by the system. The implicit and explicit relaxations can also be combined and performed interactively by both the system and the user. CSQL, an extension of SQL for cooperative query answering, is also proposed. Preliminary experimental results reveal that the proposed type abstraction hierarchy provides an organized structure representing concepts at different knowledge levels in various domains, and provides a systematic and efficient method for cooperative query answering. >
