Abstract: Logic programming has often been considered less than adequate for modelling the dynamics of knowledge changing over time. In this paper we describe a simple though quite powerful approach to modelling the updates of knowledge bases expressed by generalized logic programs, by means of a new language, hereby christened EVOLP (after EVOlving Logic Programs). The approach was first sparked by a critical analysis of previous efforts and results in this direction [1,2,7,11], and aims to provide a simpler, and at once more general, formulation of logic program updating, which runs closer to traditional logic programming (LP) doctrine. From the syntactical point of view, evolving programs are just generalized logic programs (i.e. normal LPs plus default negation also in rule heads), extended with (possibly nested) assertions, whether in heads or bodies of rules. From the semantics viewpoint, a model-theoretic characterization is offered of the possible evolutions of such programs. These evolutions arise both from self (or internal) updating, and from external updating too, originating in the environment. This formulation sets evolving programs on a firm basis in which to express, implement, and reason about dynamic knowledge bases, and opens up a number of interesting research topics that we brush on.

Abstract: The authors introduce two reorganization primitives, composition and decomposition, which change the population of agents and the distribution of knowledge in an organization. To create these primitives, they formalize organizational knowledge, which represents knowledge of potential and necessary interactions among agents in an organization. The authors develop computational organizational self-design (OSD) techniques for agents with architectures based on production systems to take advantage of the well-understood body of theory and practice. They first extend parallel production systems, where global control exists, into distributed production systems, where problems are solved by a society of agents using distributed control. Then they introduce OSD into distributed production systems to provide adaptive work allocation. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach in adapting to changing environmental demands. The approach affects production system design and improves the ability of build production systems that can adapt to changing real-time constraints. >

TL;DR: The work presented here is the only one to the authors' knowledge that describes language divergence phenomena in the framework of computational linguistics through a South Asian language.
Abstract: Interlingua and transfer-based approaches to machine translation have long been in use in competing and complementary ways. The former proves economical in situations where translation among multiple languages is involved, and can be used as a knowledge-representation scheme. But given a particular interlingua, its adoption depends on its ability (a) to capture the knowledge in texts precisely and accurately and (b) to handle cross-language divergences. This paper studies the language divergence between English and Hindi and its implication to machine translation between these languages using the Universal Networking Language (UNL). UNL has been introduced by the United Nations University, Tokyo, to facilitate the transfer and exchange of information over the internet. The representation works at the level of single sentences and defines a semantic net-like structure in which nodes are word concepts and arcs are semantic relations between these concepts. The language divergences between Hindi, an Indo-European language, and English can be considered as representing the divergences between the SOV and SVO classes of languages. The work presented here is the only one to our knowledge that describes language divergence phenomena in the framework of computational linguistics through a South Asian language.
