TL;DR: In this article, the main focus is on the equilibrium properties of a single component atomic Bose gas, which (at least at rest) forms a Bose-Einstein condensate.
Abstract: In this article, we review developments in the theory of rapidly rotating degenerate atomic gases. The main focus is on the equilibrium properties of a single-component atomic Bose gas, which (at least at rest) forms a Bose–Einstein condensate. Rotation leads to the formation of quantized vortices which order into a vortex array, in close analogy with the behaviour of superfluid helium. Under conditions of rapid rotation, when the vortex density becomes large, atomic Bose gases offer the possibility to explore the physics of quantized vortices in novel parameter regimes. First, there is an interesting regime in which the vortices become sufficiently dense that their cores, as set by the healing length, start to overlap. In this regime, the theoretical description simplifies, allowing a reduction to single-particle states in the lowest Landau level. Second, one can envisage entering a regime of very high vortex density, when the number of vortices becomes comparable to the number of particles in the gas. I...

TL;DR: In this paper, a self-consistent Born approximation of the density of states and the conductivity of undoped systems in magnetic fields is proposed, where the quantum theory provides results quite different from the results of Boltzmann transport theory even in the absence of a magnetic field.
Abstract: In a self-consistent Born approximation, the density of states and the conductivity are calculated in a two-dimensional graphite sheet in magnetic fields. Two different cases of scatterers are considered, the short-range case where the range is smaller than the lattice constant and the long-range case where it is comparable or slightly larger. The quantum theory provides results quite different from the results of Boltzmann transport theory even in the absence of a magnetic field. In high magnetic fields, the conductivity exhibits a series of peaks, whose values depend only on the natural constants and the Landau level index. The conductivity of undoped systems is always given by a universal conductivity \(e^{2}/\pi^{2}\hbar\) independent of a magnetic field.

TL;DR: This work predicts that a new phenomenon, the quantum anomalous Hall effect, can be realized in Hg{1-y}Mn{y}Te quantum wells, without an external magnetic field and the associated Landau levels.
Abstract: The quantum Hall effect is usually observed when a two-dimensional electron gas is subjected to an external magnetic field, so that their quantum states form Landau levels. In this work we predict that a new phenomenon, the quantum anomalous Hall effect, can be realized in Hg{1-y}Mn{y}Te quantum wells, without an external magnetic field and the associated Landau levels. This effect arises purely from the spin polarization of the Mn atoms, and the quantized Hall conductance is predicted for a range of quantum well thickness and the concentration of the Mn atoms. This effect enables dissipationless charge current in spintronics devices.

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that at small twist angles, the electronic properties of bilayer graphene moiré crystals are strongly altered by electron–electron interactions.
Abstract: According to electronic structure theory, bilayer graphene is expected to have anomalous electronic properties when it has long-period moire patterns produced by small misalignments between its individual layer honeycomb lattices. We have realized bilayer graphene moire crystals with accurately controlled twist angles smaller than 1° and studied their properties using scanning probe microscopy and electron transport. We observe conductivity minima at charge neutrality, satellite gaps that appear at anomalous carrier densities for twist angles smaller than 1°, and tunneling densities-of-states that are strongly dependent on carrier density. These features are robust up to large transverse electric fields. In perpendicular magnetic fields, we observe the emergence of a Hofstadter butterfly in the energy spectrum, with fourfold degenerate Landau levels, and broken symmetry quantum Hall states at filling factors ±1, 2, 3. These observations demonstrate that at small twist angles, the electronic properties of bilayer graphene moire crystals are strongly altered by electron-electron interactions.

TL;DR: Low temperature high magnetic field scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy of graphene flakes on graphite that exhibit the structural and electronic properties of graphene decoupled from the substrate are reported.
Abstract: We report low temperature high magnetic field scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy of graphene flakes on graphite that exhibit the structural and electronic properties of graphene decoupled from the substrate. Pronounced peaks in the tunneling spectra develop with increasing field revealing a Landau level sequence that provides a direct way to identify graphene and to determine the degree of its coupling to the substrate. The Fermi velocity and quasiparticle lifetime, obtained from the positions and width of the peaks, provide access to the electron-phonon and electron-electron interactions.
