TL;DR: In this article, a power manager within a portable laptop computer provides power and clocking control to various units within the computer in order to conserve battery power, including transistor switches controlled by the power manager.
Abstract: A power manager within a portable laptop computer provides power and clocking control to various units within the computer in order to conserve battery power. Transistor switches controlled by the power manager control the distribution of power and/or clock signals to the various units within the computer. The power manager includes a software routine for continually monitoring the various units and when these units are either not needed and/or not currently in use, power and/or clock signals are removed from a given unit.

TL;DR: In this article, a scheduled access multiaccess protocol is implemented to effectively conserve battery power by suitable control of the state of the controller, the transmitter and receiver units at the wireless link adapter by scheduling when the adapter is in a normal running mode, or a standby mode in which power is conserved.
Abstract: A method and apparatus for conserving battery power in a wireless link adapter of a battery operated computer such as a portable laptop computer, as controlled by a scheduled multiaccess protocol. The portable computer is operable as a mobile unit in a multi-cell wireless network. The scheduled access multiaccess protocol is implemented to effectively conserve battery power by suitable control of the state of the controller, the transmitter and receiver units at the wireless link adapter by scheduling when the adapter is in a normal running mode, or a standby mode in which power is conserved.

TL;DR: LP-DOS is the first product to also completely support the Microsoft Windows environment opening the world of Windows to people with low vision.
Abstract: As a visually impaired computer user the author needed a simple solution that would allow him and others to see and use the vast range of PC text and graphics programs. He created LP-DOS (Large Print DOS). LP-DOS is a software package that can run on any PC or laptop. It can be used anywhere: business, home, or school. Once loaded, LP-DOS magnifies wordprocessors, spreadsheets, educational software, and video games. Now, LP-DOS is also the first product to also completely support the Microsoft Windows environment opening the world of Windows to people with low vision. >

TL;DR: In this paper, a laptop computer security attachment and handle assembly consisting of an elongated mounting bracket having at each end and extending perpendicularly therefrom an L-shaped bracket and a handle member with bushings was presented.
Abstract: A laptop computer security attachment and handle assembly comprising an elongated mounting bracket having at each end and extending perpendicularly therefrom an L-shaped bracket and an elongated handle member with bushings for pivotally attaching the handle member to the L-shaped members. One of the L-shaped members is provided with an elongated hole for receiving a security cable for securing the laptop computer to a structure as by a padlock, or the like.

TL;DR: Computer animation complements text explanation, image documentation, and graphic analysis techniques and may emerge as a critical tool to assist in the efficient processing and analysis of greater volumes of educational data in plastic surgery training.
Abstract: Rapid developments in communications networks (cellular telephone, direct-link satellite, and international high-speed computer nets) and the continued success of affordable powerful personal computers (desktop, laptop and soon "palmtop" devices) have set the stage for educational materials accessible by electronic means. Computer-based multimedia are sophisticated audiovisual teaching materials built from digitized illustrations, photographs, audio and video recordings viewed by display on a computer screen. The computer interface allows interactive access to information, and connectivity to other sources of information. Computer programmability allows presentation of a single collection of information at different levels of sophistication (the "patient", "medical student" or "surgeon trainee" level, for example), to appeal to different viewer needs. The information may be electronically updated or changed whenever appropriate. This desktop exhibit demonstrates multimedia plastic surgery teaching materials with full-fidelity digital sound, three-dimensional computer graphics, and "picture-in-picture" video capabilities that we have developed since 1989. We have used these materials at St. Louis University for patient informed consent, and the education of medical students and surgical trainees. We are excited that similar multimedia teaching materials are now becoming commercially available in other fields of medical education, attesting to broadening interest among educators and publishers.

Abstract: Numerical studies have been implemented to examine an effective computer simulation method of thermal design for electronic equipment. The proposed approach is a simple analysis using a lumped model which includes experimental values such as the fluid resistance coefficient and heat transfer coefficients. The proposed approach was applied to the design of a laptop computer using a personal computer. >

TL;DR: Pen tablets, as opposed to pen clipboards, use faster, more expensive processors, store more data, and "are expected to allow [caregivers] to carry full patient charting with them ... and allow information to be recorded directly to patient files."
Abstract: Portable computing devices generally are classified into four categories: laptop, palmtop, notebook, and pen-based computers. If a portable unit weighs over eight pounds, call it a laptop. If a stylus is used to input data, call it pen-based or a pen computer. Palmtops frequently are electronic organizers or resources: Sharp's Wizard line stores appointments and addresses; Franklin's Med-Spell contains Stedman's medical dictionary. Notebooks often incorporate a QWERT keyboard, and sometimes include a pointing device. NEC's notebooks in 1988 were the first sub-laptop computers. According to a 1992 report from Market Intelligence Research Corp., Mountain View, Calif., 4.6 million sub-laptops were sold in 1991 for $2.6 billion. By 1998 the market may reach $25 billion. The report predicts that one sub-category of pen computers, which are designed to be held in one hand while information is input with a pen-like stylus, will prove most useful to the health-care industry. Pen tablets, as opposed to pen clipboards, use faster, more expensive processors, store more data, and "are expected to allow [caregivers] to carry full patient charting with them ... and allow information to be recorded directly to patient files." Sub-laptops are on-line in many healthcare facilities: Greenwich hospital, Stanford University Medical Clinic, Humana Hospital Audubon, Rancho Los Amigos Medical Center, and others.

TL;DR: Interest in the use of word processors in the teaching of writing skills has been given fresh impetus by curriculum changes and the mandatory crosscurricular use of information technology.
Abstract: Over the past few years, interest in the use of word processors in the teaching of writing skills has been given fresh impetus by curriculum changes and the mandatory crosscurricular use of information technology (IT). In English, for example, a typical attainment progression starts with pupils varying sentence structure, then improving the content and eventually becoming independent in planning and revising. Word processing is claimed to have several advantages over pencil and paper, for example it can: 0 motivate pupils to undertake writing tasks, 0 encourage pupils to create longer passages of writing, 0 encourage pupils to edit and improve their work.
