TL;DR: In this article, the case study of the laptop computer is used to highlight the tension between the discourses of technological determinism and the social construction of technology, highlighting the need to produce a portable computer as a marker of executive sensibilities.
Abstract: The laptop computer has largely managed to retain its initial status as a marker of executive sensibilities – an electronic briefcase of cutting-edge technology. The first true laptop was the ‘Compass’ computer by GRiD Systems, which has been presented as a result of the convergence of technologies - a product that was ‘ready to happen’. This rhetoric of determinism [in this context, ‘design’] is, at odds with the long history of attempts to produce a portable computer [the desire]. This paper aims to use the case study of the laptop computer to highlight the tension between the discourses of technological determinism and the social construction of technology.

Abstract: The present invention in several embodiments is an apparatus that can securely hold one's laptop computer during use while reducing the chance of the unit overheating. This item is preferably constructed of Plexiglas, a transparent thermoplastic, a polymer or a suitable, durable material. A laptop computer may be set on the apparatus of the present invention and fit into place with the rubber feet on the computer. This unit may raise the computer off the lap or furniture allowing better air circulation around it, keeping it cool. This portable stand may also have an area built in that can hold papers if desired by the user.

The data input device includes a double-sided transparent touchscreen which provides keyed input and/or trackpad input to a separate computing device such as a mainframe computer, desktop computer, laptop, tablet, netbook, notebook, personal digital assistant (PDA), gaming console, e-reader, smartphone, or smartwatch by way of a wired or wireless connection, and includes control devices, such as a remote controller for gaming and/or control of one or more vehicles.
