Abstract: A dual-scatter laser Doppler velocimeter (LDV) system designed for measuring wind tunnel flow velocity is described. The system simultaneously measures two orthogonal velocity components of a flowing fluid at a common point in the flow. Essential single-velocity component dual-scatter concepts are presented to simplify the description of the more sophisticated two-component system. To implement the two-component system three laser beams with a 0°, 45°, and 90° polarization plane relationship are focused to a common point in the flow by the system-transmitting optics. The beams interfere to form two perpendicular sets of interference fringe planes that are orthogonally polarized. The system-receiving optics collect and separate the orthogonally polarized components of laser radiation scattered from micron-size particles moving with the flowing fluid through the fringes. The system requires no artificial seeding, since intrinsic test section aerosols are utilized for radiation scattering. The passage of each scatter particle through the interference fringes simultaneously produces two frequency-burst-type photodetected signals, the frequencies of which are directly proportional to two perpendicular components of particle velocity. The system photodetection, signal-conditioning, and data acquisition instrumentation is specifically designed to process the frequency burst information in the time domain as opposed to spectrum analysis or frequency domain processing. The system was initially evaluated in an AEDC wind tunnel operating over a Mach number range from 0.6 to 1.5. The LDV and calculated wind tunnel mean velocity data agreed to within 1.25%; flow direction deviations of a few milliradians were resolved.

Abstract: The paper presents an experimental investigation on the flow-induced vibrations of two tandem circular cylinders for spacing ratio is the cylinder diameter. Both cylinders are allowed to vibrate only laterally. Extensive measurements are conducted to capture the cylinder vibration and frequency responses, surface pressures, shedding frequencies and flow fields using laser vibrometer, hotwire, pressure scanner and PIV techniques. Four vibration regimes are identified based on the characteristics and generation mechanisms of the cylinder galloping vibrations. Several findings are made on the mechanisms of vibration generation and sustainability. First, the initial states (vibrating or fixed) of a cylinder may have a pronounced impact on the vibration of the other. Second, alternating reattachment, detachment, rolling up and shedding of the upper and lower gap shear layers all contribute to the vibrations. Third, the gap vortices around the base surface of the upstream cylinder produce positive work on the cylinder, sustaining the upstream cylinder vibration. Fourth, reattachment, detachment and switching of the gap shear layers result in largely positive work on the downstream cylinder, playing an important role in sustaining its vibration.

Abstract: In a laser surgical equipment consisting of a laser oscillator oscillating a laser output, an optical waveguide connected to the laser oscillator and transmitting the laser output and a hand piece connected to the optical waveguide and radiating the laser output to a diseased part to be radiated, the improvement comprising detection means for detecting the laser output from the hand piece, comparison means for comparing the output of the detection means with a predetermined value and control means for controlling the laser oscillator by the output of the comparison means and for setting the laser output of the hand piece to the predetermined value.

Abstract: The method of buried landmine detection based on using elastic waves in the ground and a laser Doppler vibrometer (LDV) as a vibration sensor has shown excellent performance in field tests. To increase the speed of measurements, a multi-beam laser Doppler vibrometer (MB-LDV) was developed. The system is based on a heterodyne interferometer and is capable of simultaneously measuring the vibration of the ground at 16 points over a span of 1 m with a velocity resolution of less than 1 µm/s. Both digital in-phase and quadrature (I&Q) and analog phase-locked loop (PLL) demodulation have been used for signal processing. The MB-LDV can create a velocity image of the ground surface either in "stop-and-stare" mode or in a continuously scanning mode. The continuously scanning operation results in an increased velocity noise floor due to speckle noise. The speckle noise floor increases with the increase of the speed of the laser beam and can degrade the velocity image of a mine. To overcome the effects of speckle noise, the excitation source must provide a ground vibration velocity higher than the velocity noise floor of the vibrometer. The MB-LDV has been tested at landmine test lanes and shows the ability to detect buried landmine within a one-square-meter area in a time of less than 20 s.
