TL;DR: In this article, the authors derive expressions for the bounds on the precision of response latency measures made using a free-running digital clock and discuss other possible sources of measurement errors, such as the finite resolution of the digital clock, the unscheduled delays in recording the time of occurrence of an event, and the uncertainty of the stimulus presentation for stimuli presented on a CRT terminal.
Abstract: We derive expressions for the bounds on the precision of response latency measures made using a free-running digital clock and discuss other possible sources of measurement errors. In a multitask, real-time environment, there are three possible sources of large measurement errors: (1) the finite resolution of the digital clock, (2) unscheduled delays in recording the time of occurrence of an event, and (3) the uncertainty of the time of stimulus presentation for stimuli presented on a CRT terminal.

TL;DR: It is proved that the difference betweenmean latency for incorrect responses and mean latency for correct ones in signal detection situations can be used as a measure for the separation between SN and N distributions, provided that certain plausible conditions are met.
Abstract: It proved that the difference between mean latency for incorrect responses and mean latency for correct ones in signal detection situations can be used as a measure for the separation between SN and N distributions, provided that certain plausible conditions are met. The applicability of this method to various paradigms is briefly discussed.
