TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the heat budget of the Siberian high by using a compositing method and selected several cases of strong Siberian high that moved over China from the northwest from datasets covering five winters (December through February of 1980-1984).
Abstract: The heat budget of the Siberian high is investigated by using a compositing method. Ninteen cases of strong Siberian highs that moved over China from the northwest were selected from datasets covering five winters (December through February of 1980–1984). The apparent heat source (Q1)and the apparent moisture sink (Q2) were estimated via budget calculations. The diabatic heating terms were also calculated via direct use of physical parameterization schemes. The vertical transports of sensible and latent heat from subgrid-scale of motions were estimated as residuals from the thermodynamic energy equation. Over the region of the region of the Siberian high, strong radiative cooling and large-scale descending motion (with large-scale mass convergence over the upper and middle tropospheric and divergence over the lower troposphere) contributes to a rapid buildup of the Siberian high. Heating in the upper troposphere due to subgrid-scale sensible heat transfer is also an important factor in the mainte...

TL;DR: In this article, an improved environmental control unit using in unitary combination a heat pipe as the heat source for the regeneration of the L-wheel is described, which is shown to be efficient, safe, easily controllable and self-adjustable.
Abstract: The application discloses an improved environmental control unit using in unitary combination a heat pipe as the heat source for the regeneration of the L-wheel The heat pipe contains sodium metal which is vaporized by heating one end of the pipe in a firebox remote from the environmental control unit The other end of the heat pipe extends into the heating section just upstream from the L-wheel There, the air passing over the heat pipe surface, which optionally may be finned, causes sodium vapor in the pipe to condense, thus giving up its latent heat of condensation to the air stream, heating it to a temperature sufficient to dry the wheel The improved heat pipe is efficient, safe, easily controllable and self-adjustable

TL;DR: In this article, the authors analyzed 5 years of EC carbon dioxide, water vapor, and sensible heat flux measurements from three mature boreal forest stands in central Saskatchewan, Canada, and derived an analogous FNEE ''closure fraction'' CF NEE by normalizing measured FNEE against estimates from an empirical model.

TL;DR: In this paper, the shape-stabilized paraffin can be used in a latent heat storage system without encapsulation using a transient hot wire method, a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), a water and a volume expansion meter.
Abstract: This report deals with thermophysical properties and measuring methods of shape-stabilized paraffin as a new type of latent heat storage material, which keeps the same shape in a solid state when the paraffin melts Therefore, this type paraffin can be used in a latent heat storage system without encapsulation A transient hot wire method, a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), a water calorimeter and a volume expansion meter, which were developed in the present study, were used to measure effective thermal conductivity, latent heat, specific heat and density of the shape-stabilized paraffin, respectively From the obtained data, useful correlation equations of the above-mentioned thermophysical properties of the shape-stabilized paraffin were expressed as functions of physical property and mass fraction of each constituent of the shape-stabilized paraffin
