TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a review of the literature on Lean Six Sigma from six different perspectives pertaining to manufacturing firms and develop a generic framework that incorporates environmental focus into the Lean 6 Sigma framework, which helps in reducing cost, wastes, environmental impacts and other inefficiencies associated with the manufacturing process.
Abstract: Lean Six Sigma enables contemporary manufacturing organizations to attain waste elimination and defect reduction. As manufacturing systems are becoming environmentally sustainable, Lean Six Sigma framework needs to be integrated with sustainability tools to enable environmental and operational benefits. The purpose of this article is to review the literature on Lean Six Sigma from six different perspectives pertaining to manufacturing firms. A qualitative type of review methodology was adopted for conducting the review. Research articles related to the topic were collected from leading journal databases. Further, literature analysis was also performed on Lean Six Sigma with environmental focus. A total of 70 research articles that are in line with the research were selected and reviewed. Based on the insights obtained from analysis, a generic framework for implementation of Lean Six Sigma with environmentally benign tools was developed. The developed framework incorporates environmental aspects while implementing Lean Six Sigma which helps in reducing cost, wastes, environmental impacts, and other inefficiencies associated with the manufacturing process. This review article highlights the insights on Lean Six Sigma by conducting a systematic review pertaining to manufacturing firms and development of a generic framework that incorporates environmental focus into the Lean Six Sigma framework. This article enables researchers in developing knowledge on the concept of Lean Six Sigma with environmental focus and also helps them to formulate and implement Lean Six Sigma concepts to attain operational and environmental benefits.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors focus on three fundamental human-related behaviour factors associated with Lean Six Sigma (LSS) projects in German manufacturing small-and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) on the readiness of people (managers and their staff) to commence LSS projects.
Abstract: Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to focus on three fundamental human-related behaviour factors associated with Lean Six Sigma (LSS) projects in German manufacturing small-and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) on the readiness of people (managers and their staff) to commence LSS projects. These are core personal competence, strategic vision of the people and the organisational culture of the specific organisation. Design/methodology/approach – Based on a thorough review of the academic literature a set of hypotheses were constructed to examine the level of association between people’s competence, vision and culture with LSS readiness within SMEs. This was done using correlation and regression analysis. Data collection were carried out in seven different German manufacturing SMEs involved in aerospace supply and agro-food manufacturing using a survey instrument. Findings – It was found that there is a strong positive association between the core competence of people and organisational culture with readi...

TL;DR: The applicability of Lean Six Sigma to the UK public sector has been discussed in this article, where a summary of the challenges facing the public sector is shown from current literature and this is presented as drivers for change.
Abstract: Purpose The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the widespread but fragmented application of Lean Six Sigma within the UK public sector, providing the context of some of the challenges faced within the sector as well as some of the successful applications of Lean Six Sigma. The paper fundamentally seeks to challenge the concept that Lean Six Sigma is not suitable for use in the public sector. Design/methodology/approach A summary of the challenges facing the public sector is shown from current literature and this is presented as drivers for change. A number of successful applications of Lean Six Sigma are then evidenced demonstrating examples across areas of the public sector. Findings This paper concludes that while Lean Six Sigma is applicable to the UK public sector additional work is required to better evidence the benefits and return on investment that can be delivered as well as considering more holistic approaches on an agency wide basis. Research limitations/implications This paper seeks to contribute to and broaden the limited body of evidence of the applicability of Lean Six Sigma to the UK public sector and identifies areas for further research and review. Practical implications Understanding the applicability of Lean Six Sigma affords opportunities to public sector agencies in the current budget climate but additionally affords ways in which quality of service can be enhanced. In some cases, it provides opportunities to meet new statutory requirements around community empowerment. Originality/value The paper contributes to the body of evidence that demonstrates the effectiveness of Lean Six Sigma within the public sector and suggests opportunity for those agencies to meet funding challenges faced across the UK.

TL;DR: A review of the published literature related to lean six sigma from start to date is presented in this paper, which includes the results from different perspectives such as implementation of Lean Six sigma, Focus Area, Focus Industry, Focus Country, Year Wise Publications and Year Wise Focus Area and Focus Industry.
Abstract: This paper reviews the published literature related to lean six sigma from start to date. The methodology involves is the review study of 116 papers related to Lean six sigma from well known database searches including Science Direct, EBSCO host, Emerald and Google Scholars. The paper includes the results from different perspectives such as implementation of Lean six sigma, Focus Area, Focus Industry, Focus Country, Year Wise Publications and Year Wise Focus Area and Focus Industry. The review of literature found that Lean Six Sigma is mostly implemented in the Health industry. Research on LSS is on elementary stage. Lean Six sigma framework in SME organizations is needed.

TL;DR: In this paper, a large scale implementation of the Lean Six Sigma (LSS) methodology at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology has been reported to have resulted in improvements in business processes and efficiency.
Abstract: Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to contribute to the body of Lean Six Sigma (LSS) knowledge within the field of higher education institutions. The paper will review the initial phase of an implementation and highlight future challenges of applying the LSS method in a complex transactional environment. Design/methodology/approach – The observations presented in this paper originate from rolling out a large LSS implementation at a recently established university. The paper is supported with secondary data from literature. Findings – The implementation of LSS methodology at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology has resulted in improvements in business processes and efficiency. This has been achieved through project execution and training programs. Approximately 350 staff members have completed awareness training, 50 yellow belts and 150 green belts have been trained, and the first round of seven black belts have completed training of which two have completed certification. Research limita...
