TL;DR: In this paper , the authors identify and analyze barriers to have an obstacle free implementation of integrated Lean Six Sigma (LSS) and Industry 4.0 (I4.0) through literature review.
Abstract: PurposeLean Six Sigma (LSS) is a continuous improvement procedure that helps in improving the performance, decreasing variations, reducing lead time and increasing profit. Industry 4.0 (I4.0) portrays a new phase in the enterprise and aims at digitalization of the enterprise. The basis of I4.0 is a cyber-physical system, leading to product networking and complete coordination of process, value enhancement and further optimization. Integrating LSS methodology with I4.0 will give an edge in competitiveness to an enterprise. The aim of this study is to identify and analyze barriers to have an obstacle free implementation.Design/methodology/approachLSS and I4.0 barriers are identified through literature review. In this paper 18 barriers of LSS and I4.0 that hinder the implementation of integrated LSS and I4.0 are collected. Analysis of barriers was done using interpretive ranking process (IRP).FindingsFrom the results, it is observed that lack of top management attitude, commitment and involvement are the most dominant barriers.Practical implicationsThe study is done by gathering inputs from industry practitioners and derived inferences have practical relevance.Originality/valueThe study of barriers for integrated LSS and I4.0 is the original contribution of the authors.

TL;DR: In this article , a conceptual model identifying the tools that can help achieve the desired results in the three pillars of sustainability aligned with operational excellence is proposed, which is based on a bibliometric analysis of the literature that relates the concepts of lean thinking, 6 sigma, lean six sigma and Shingo model.
Abstract: Companies are continuously looking to improve their production systems using excellence models, with lean thinking, the Shingo model, six sigma and lean six sigma being the most comprehensive and applied. It is expected that the initial focus for the survival of companies is their economic profitability, but when economic needs are met, the next step is to achieve operational excellence. For this, in addition to economic objectives, it is necessary to include social and environmental objectives, i.e., the other two pillars of sustainability. This study aims to propose a conceptual model identifying the tools that can help achieve the desired results in the three pillars of sustainability aligned with operational excellence. The design of the conceptual model was based on a bibliometric analysis of the literature that relates the concepts of lean thinking, six sigma, lean six sigma and the Shingo model. The Web of Science was the platform selected for the collection of data, and the timeframe considered was 2010 to 2021. A total of 125 articles were analyzed using the VosViewer software, through which it was possible to analyze different topics of study related to the literature. The bibliometric analysis allowed for the identification of the temporal distribution of publications, the categorization of topics, different areas of application and the importance of the tools used in different practical cases. This study points out that companies have at their disposal several tools to achieve economic objectives. On the other hand, there is a set of more restricted tools that are used to meet the objectives of the social and environmental pillars. Future research should focus on identifying tools that meet social and environmental goals in order to strengthen these pillars that are essential for operational excellence and for the sustainability of companies.

TL;DR: The results revealed that there was a statistically significant relationship between Lean Six Sigma (LSS) dimensions and the quality of healthcare services provided in physiotherapy units at the UNRWA healthcare centers.
Abstract: Integrating Lean and Six Sigma found a powerful business tool for the strategy improvement process and saving time is produced. The main aim of this study is to identify the impact of Lean Six Sigma (LSS) practices on physiotherapy service quality at healthcare centers of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), using a descriptive-analytical approach. Data were collected using a questionnaire distributed among 49 physiotherapists working at UNRWA healthcare centers as a census sampling method between July 2016 and August 2017, following the stratified random sampling method. The Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) was used to analyze the collected data. The results revealed that there was a statistically significant relationship between Lean Six Sigma (LSS) dimensions and the quality of healthcare services provided in physiotherapy units at the UNRWA healthcare centers. Moreover, the application of Lean Six Sigma dimensions was adopted at 81% of UNRWA healthcare centers. Moreover, the percentage of patients’ satisfaction regarding the quality of healthcare services provided in physiotherapy units was 89%. The study emphasized the effectiveness of Lean Six Sigma dimensions application on the quality healthcare services provided in physiotherapy units at the UNRWA healthcare centers. Furthermore, employee training and reward according to a needs assessment to implement Lean Six Sigma successfully is highly recommended.

TL;DR: The objective of this work is to reduce the Turnaround Time (TAT) of the laboratory tests in the pediatric emergency department of a tertiary-care hospital in India and the applicability of LSS DMAIC (Define-Measure-Analyze-Improve-Control) methodology to reduced the TAT is explored.
Abstract: Lean Six Sigma (LSS) is a Quality Improvement (QI) method that integrates the speed of lean principles and robustness of Six Sigma (SS). LSS methodology, though invented and employed in manufacturing sectors initially, is also accepted widely across service sectors. The objective of this work is to reduce the Turnaround Time (TAT) of the laboratory tests in the pediatric emergency department of a tertiary-care hospital in India. The applicability of LSS DMAIC (Define-Measure-Analyze-Improve-Control) methodology to reduce the TAT is explored. During the pre-intervention period, a total of 44 samples were sent to the lab for testing, and the average TAT was found to be 69 minutes. A multidisciplinary team of experts constructed the Value Stream Map (VSM), and each step in the process was analyzed. Through brainstorming and 5-why analysis, the root causes of delay were identified, and the corresponding improvement actions were finalized. During the course of the work, various lean wastes in the process were also identified and eliminated. A new process map was designed, and the improvised process was simulated using the simulation software ARENA and results were obtained. The results of the improvised process show a substantial reduction in TAT. The reduced TAT will decrease the overcrowding of patients and thus will result in smooth patient flow. Hence, through the systematic LSS approach, the opportunities for improvements can be identified and eliminated for better operational efficiency and patient satisfaction in the healthcare sector.

TL;DR: In this article, a study was conducted by performing several times of Wedang Uwuh Sruput production with several variations of composition/formula using Taguchi method to maintain product consistency and quality, it was found that the most appropriate composition based on consumer preferences was sugar 2.9 kg; ginger 1.4; water 5 L; and Wood Secang 200 gr.
Abstract: Wedang Uwuh Instan Sruput is one of the business unit of Industrial Engineering Program,Faculty of Engineering,Universitas Sarjanawiyata Tamansiswa Yogyakarta.Wedang Uwuh Sruput is an innovative manufacture of wedang uwuh into instant from the original form of whole and raw spices. The resulting product results sometimes have different quality/taste in each production process. The purpose of this research is to improve product quality of Wedang Uwuh Instan Sruput, improve the composition of herb wedang uwuh product, improve the concept of packaging and improve the marketing of the wedang uwuh products. The object of this research is Wedang Uwuh Sruput Prodi Teknik Industri UST.The materials used are instant wedang uwuh maker such as ginger, clove leaf, cinnamon leaf, secang wood, cloves, lemongrass, sugar and water.Identification is done on factors that affect product quality in order to create the same product in the market. The experiment was conducted by performing several times of Wedang Uwuh Sruput production with several variations of composition/formula using Taguchi method to maintain product consistency and quality. In this experiment there are 4 factors(sugar, ginger, water and secang)with 3 level design, that is 2,8 kg;2.9 kg and 3.0 kg for sugar,1.0 kg;1.2 kg and 1.4 kg for ginger, water is 5.0 L;5.2 L and 5.4 L,while the secang is 200 gr,210 gr,220 gr.The difference of the output of Wedang Uwuh Sruput is caused by the difference of sugar content, the difference of ginger content, the difference of the amount of water and the difference of the number of secang used, the use of different raw material specification, the length of production process is not same and the production process is still manual. The result shows that Waste which has the highest weight is waiting with the value of 0.252 at rank 31.Then the calculation of sigma value at early check is at the level of 3,001 sigma and final check at 2,455 sigma level. From the calculation of sigma level can be seen that the level of quality in Business Unit Wedang Uwuh "Sruput" is still far from lean six sigma target. Therefore, the advice given to the Business Unit Wedang Uwuh "Sruput" in the form of corrective actions that have been analyzed in this study. It was found that the most appropriate composition based on consumer preferences was Sugar 2.9 kg;Ginger 1.4;Water 5 L; and Wood Secang 200 gr.
