TL;DR: In this article , the authors present a Six Sigma project carried out in an Outpatient Pharmaceutical Care Unit at Hospital Universitario Doctor Peset in Valencia (Spain), where they illustrate the benefits of using latent variables-based models, specifically Partial Least Squares Regression (PLS), integrating them into the DMAIC phases of the project.
Abstract: KEY POINT Six Sigma strategies for process improvement are widely used in industry and manufacturing. The spreading tendency to gather process data about hospital activity is leading to an increase of process improvement projects in the healthcare context. The complexity of these databases requires upgrading the classical statistical Six Sigma toolkit. In this paper we present a Six Sigma project carried out in an Outpatient Pharmaceutical Care Unit at Hospital Universitario Doctor Peset in Valencia (Spain), where we illustrate the benefits of using latent variables-based models, specifically Partial Least Squares Regression (PLS), integrating them into the DMAIC phases of the project.

TL;DR: In this paper , the authors present the critical factors that are responsible for the successful implementation of Lean Six Sigma (LSS) practices within manufacturing SMEs, including leadership, management, finance organisational culture and skills and expertise.
Abstract: The purpose of this research paper is to present the critical factors that are responsible for the successful implementation of Lean Six Sigma (LSS) practices within manufacturing SMEs. A combination of comprehensive literature review and visits to various SMEs based in the northern part of India were employed in the study. The companies' practices were observed to highlight the degree of LSS implementation within these companies. This was followed by interviewing of the relevant and key personnel involved in lean implementation. Results were analysed and validated through workshops and case studies. Several critical factors that determine the success of implementing the concept of LSS within SMEs are identified. Leadership, management, finance organisational culture and skills and expertise, amongst other factors; are classified as the most pertinent issues critical for the successful adoption of LSS within SMEs environment. Further regression test has been performed upon the identified critical success factors to determine their significance with respect to scrap reduction and quality improvement.

TL;DR: In this article , the authors made an attempt to understand the conjunction of Lean Six Sigma and Industry 4.0 and found that although the conjunction is connected with challenges, the perspectives are beneficial for industrial companies.
Abstract: Abstract As advanced technologies are becoming a natural part of the industrial environment, the influence of these technologies on organizational practices is becoming more expanding. In this paper, an attempt was made to understand the conjunction of Lean Six Sigma and Industry 4.0. The study was conducted in the Czech Republic and qualitative data was gathered from 10 companies. The information on the benefits, weaknesses and challenges of the conjunction was summarized. For the research purposes literature review and qualitative analysis were performed. It was found out that, although the conjunction is connected with challenges, the perspectives are beneficial for industrial companies. The data generated also allowed to introduce the readiness assessment model for the implementation of the conjunction based on 4 categories: technological, managerial, financial and human. This information could be used for theoretical and practical purposes for the creation of a successful Lean Six Sigma pattern in Industry 4.0.

TL;DR: In this paper , the authors introduce the Donabedian model for change and Deming's Plan-Do-Study-Act process as models commonly used in QI activities and present a proactive tool, namely the health care failure mode effects analysis.
Abstract: Staff nurses who provide direct patient care are best positioned to participate and lead quality improvement (QI) activities, thus affecting the quality of care patients receive. In such manner, it is important that nurses become familiar with the essentials of QI. This chapter explores QI processes as they promote patient safety and the achievement of the best patient outcomes. It differentiates research and evidence-based practice from the process of QI. It then introduces the Donabedian model for change and Deming’s Plan-Do-Study-Act process as models commonly used in QI activities. The chapter presents a proactive tool, namely the health care failure mode effects analysis. It explores Improvement methodologies such as Six Sigma and Lean. The chapter also discusses reactive tools such as the root cause analysis process as evaluation tools used to determine the root cause of a significant near miss, an error, or sentinel event.
Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article , a comprehensive review of the LSS published papers study from inspection till the present time is presented, where the authors used a systematic literature review to study the implementation of LSS and have results from different perspectives, contexts and industries.
Abstract: the purpose of this paper is to critically review and categorize LSS published papers from start to date based on author/s country, methodologies, and types of industries. This current study shed the light in to papers done by various schoolers. A total of 280 research articles has been reviewed and analysed for the LSS research methodology adopted, type of industry, author/s, country of research and year of publication. Consequently, this study helps future researchers to perceive the spread of LSS worldwide. This paper reviewed 280 research papers for their year, author/s, research methodology, country, and type of industry. The present study provides a comprehensive review for the LSS published papers study from inspection till the present time. The present paper used a systematic literature review to study the implementation of LSS and have results from different perspectives, contexts and industries.
