TL;DR: In this paper , the authors make a diagnosis of the implementation of Lean and Six Sigma philosophies in Portuguese laboratories and evaluate the impact of these philosophies on organizational performance, finding that laboratories that implemented the philosophies were found to have a larger number of employees and turnover compared to laboratories that did not implement any Lean and/or Six Sigma philosophy.
Abstract: Purpose: This research aimed to make a diagnosis of the implementation of Lean and Six Sigma philosophies in Portuguese laboratories and to evaluate the impact of these philosophies on organizational performance. Methodology/Approach: A quantitative research methodology was used, based on the survey research strategy, and using as data collection instrument an original online questionnaire, validated and distributed to the Portuguese laboratories via email. The sample was composed by 106 laboratories. Descriptive and inferential statistical analysis were applied to the data, using IBM SPSS software. Findings: It was found that most laboratories do not know the Lean Approach and/or Six Sigma philosophies, and their implementation occurred in about one tenth of the sample. The laboratories that implemented the philosophies were found to have a larger number of employees and turnover. Finally, regarding organizational performance it was found to be superior in laboratories that implemented at least one of the philosophies when compared to laboratories that did not implement any Lean and/or Six Sigma philosophy. Research Limitation/Implication: The small sample size, which corresponds to approximately 15% of the population, is the main limitation of the study. Originality/Value of paper: This study is the first diagnosis on the application of Lean and Six Sigma philosophies made in the Portuguese laboratory market, and may provide relevant inputs for decision-making in this context.

TL;DR: In this paper , the authors identify and rank the major critical success factors (CSFs) that will affect green, lean and six sigma (GLSS) practices implementation in Pakistani SMEs.
Abstract: It is believed that implementation of green, lean and six sigma (GLSS) practices in SMEs is important to achieve sustainable growth likewise large scale industries. Pakistan is a developing country and its economic development is heavily dependent over the existence and growth of SMEs. The aim of this study is to identify and rank the major critical success factors (CSFs) that will affect GLSS practices implementation in Pakistani SMEs. List of sixteen CSFs is developed based on the available literature and with the consultation of experts. Structured interviews are conducted from the academic and field experts to collect the data. Later on, data is statistically analyzed to rank the CSFs of GLSS implementation in SMEs. Top seven CSFs that achieved above 70% agreement by the experts are Management participation and support, Training and education, Leadership for GLSS, Legislation, Understanding GLSS methodologies, Organizational infrastructure and Technology up gradation in Pakistani SMEs. This study significantly lessens the implementation troubles and will assist in conducting empirical studies in SMEs by considering CSFs in Pakistani context.

TL;DR: There needs to be more attention from the hospital on the rewards given to nurses, where nurse services should be a competitive value or competitive advantage from Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) Hospital in accordance with the hospital’s motto.
Abstract: BACKGROUND: Human resources (HR) are very important in a field, as well as hospitals which are service providers. Once the importance of HR to a development process, so it can be concluded that HR are the core of the development of an agency. The right strategy is needed to find what should be the priority of improvement so that the quality of service can be provided optimally. AIM: One way that can be used is the application of lean six sigma. The application of the Lean six sigma concept can be done in the service and manufacturing industries. One of the service industries that is interesting to apply the Lean six sigma concept is health services through hospitals. METHODS: This concept uses five stages, namely, define (problem identification), measure (measurement of quality performance), analyze (analyze the causes of defects), improvement (make improvement efforts to improve quality), and control or control. The method used in this research is action research with univariate and bivariate analysis. RESULTS: The results of the application of the lean six sigma concept indicate that there are problems in nursing services where nurse services should be a competitive value or competitive advantage from Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) Hospital in accordance with the hospital’s motto. After the analysis, it was found that there was an influence between rewards on the performance of nurses. CONCLUSION: There needs to be more attention from the hospital on the rewards given to nurses. Because of the nurse is satisfied with the reward given, the performance will be better. and there is no effect of training on the performance of nurses at USU Hospital. This improvement will certainly increase the competitive value or competitive advantage of USU Hospital.

TL;DR: In this article , the authors identify the critical success factors (CSFs) for Lean Six Sigma within a business school in Malaysia and explore the relationship between the LSS, CSFs, and organization performance.
Abstract: Lean is a process improvement approach to improve organization’s efficiency by identifying and eliminate non-value-added activities, while Six Sigma is a methodology focused on reduction of process variation. The integration of both, namely Lean Six Sigma (LSS) drives organization on waste elimination, variation reduction and value creation, which ultimately enhancing organizational performance. LSS has been viewed by prior scholars as one of effective approach for business improvement regardless of manufacturing or services industry. However, the research of LSS in education sector, particularly for business school is relatively lacking. Hence, this research aimed to identify the critical success factors (CSFs) for LSS within a business school in Malaysia. The research also aimed to explore the relationship between the LSS, CSFs, and organization performance. There were six CSFs identified from literature review, while organization performance is assessed via the concept of system theory. The research was quantitative based with the lecturers in the business school as the targeted population. Questionnaire was distributed based on stratified sampling plan with 69 responded. Descriptive and Pearson correlation analysis result revealed that lecturers within the business school perceived that all the six LSS CSFs as “very important”, and strongly correlated with organization performance, except CSF “project selection and prioritization”. As implication, finding from this research suggested that the adaption of LSS between manufacturing and education sectors shared the commonality in term of CSF. However, the business school should look into project proposal from the lecturers’ perspective as an alternate source of process improvement opportunity.
