TL;DR: It is shown that the proposed technique for calculating the eikonal function of a light field providing the focusing into a set of points is well-suited for the design of diffractive optical elements producing continuous intensity distributions within the scalar theory of diffraction.
Abstract: A new iterative technique for calculating the eikonal function of a light field providing the focusing into a set of points is introduced. This technique is a modification of the supporting quadric method widely used for design of reflecting and refracting optical surfaces for generating prescribed illuminance distributions at given discrete set of points. As an example, we design a refractive optical element which focuses an incident beam into a set of points with energy pattern forming an image of a keyboard of a calculator. It is shown that the proposed technique is well-suited for the design of diffractive optical elements producing continuous intensity distributions within the scalar theory of diffraction. It is also shown that the calculated eikonal function is a good initial guess when designing diffractive optical elements using the iterative Gerchberg-Saxton algorithm.

TL;DR: An inexpensive and simple, analytical microalgal photobioreactor with a highly controllable, dynamic, spectrally attenuated light source is described, intended for use in photophysiological and bio- physical studies of microalgae under highly controlled culture conditions.
Abstract: An inexpensive and simple, analytical microalgal photobioreactor with a highly controllable, dynamic, spectrally attenuated light source is described. Spectral attenuation is achieved through the introduction of a variable thickness of CuSO4 solution between the photobioreactor and a light source. The level of liquid is precisely determined via a computer-controlled peristaltic pump, which can be programmed to pump at a variety of rates. The resultant light fields consist of a wide range of irradiance intensities with concomitant spectral narrowing, which closely mimics modeled clear water attenuation patterns. Irradiance dynamics associated with virtually any mixing regime can be achieved. The culturing apparatus of the analytical photobioreactor is based on traditional flat-plate, photobioreactor design, but with several modifications: (1) The light path has been reduced to 1 cm to assure a uniform light field is experienced by all phytoplankton at relatively low cell densities; (2) carbon dioxide concentrations are kept constant through a negative feedback mechanism that pulses CO2 into a constant air stream when culture media pH rises above a set point; (3) temperature is controlled in a similar manner, through the addition of cooling water to a water jacket in response to an increase in culture media temperature. This design is intended for use in photophysiological and bio- physical studies of microalgae under highly controlled culture conditions. It should prove easily adaptable to any number of more complex configurations.

TL;DR: In this paper, a light source for machine vision applications includes a housing having a thermally conductive base plate which supports an array of high intensity LEDs, which are fitted with secondary lenses which are aimed such that the light beams from the LEDs illuminate fixed targets having a predetermined spatial relationship.
Abstract: A light source for machine vision applications includes a housing having a thermally conductive base plate which supports an array of high intensity LEDs. The LEDs are fitted with secondary lenses which are aimed such that the light beams from the LEDs illuminate fixed targets having a predetermined spatial relationship so that the light source produces a very uniform light field. After the lenses are aimed, they are secured in the desired position relative to their associated LEDs using a UV-curable adhesive.

TL;DR: In this paper, the spatio angular redundancy in full-parallax light field images is exploited to compress the light field image, while reducing the total computational load with minimal perceptual degradation.
Abstract: Full-parallax light field displays utilize a large volume of data and demand efficient real-time compression algorithms to be viable. Many compression techniques have been proposed. However, such solutions are impractical in bandwidth, processing or power requirements for a real-time implementation. Our method exploits the spatio angular redundancy in a full parallax light field to compress the light field image, while reducing the total computational load with minimal perceptual degradation. Objective analysis shows that depending on content, bandwidth reduction from two to four orders of magnitude is possible. Subjective analysis shows that the compression technique produces images with acceptable quality, and the system can successfully reproduce the 3D light field, providing natural binocular and full motion parallax.
