Abstract: The composite films of poly (ether ether ketone) (PEEK) filled with different proportions of graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets were prepared by the cast method. The tribological behaviors of the composite films under boundary lubrication (water and liquid paraffin oil lubrication) were investigated and compared with that under dry sliding on an UMT-2 friction and wear machine, by running a steel sphere against the composite films. The results were as follows: GO nanosheets as the filler greatly improve the wear resistance of PEEK under boundary lubrication, though the composites show a different dependence of wear resistance on the filler content. Scanning electron microscopy and optical microscopy performed to analyze the wear scar surfaces after friction confirmed that the outstanding lubrication performance of GO could be attributed to their small size and extremely thin laminated structure, which allow the GO to easily enter the contact area, thereby preventing the rough surfaces from coming into direct contact.

Abstract: A total of 227 strains of viridans streptococci were simultaneously identified on the Minitek Miniaturised System (BBL) and by a conventional method according to Colman and Williams. The Minitek discs were each overlaid with a drop of sterile liquid paraffin, and the trays were incubated in GaSPak jars (BBL) with CO2 generator envelopes. Identification was possible three to four days earlier than with the conventional method. The results were found to be in agreement with the conventional method. Compared to the identification schemes of Cowan and Steel and of Facklam, the results were also in good agreement. Minor differences were found in the number of positive and negative results in those reactions that are variable in all three schemes.

Abstract: SUMMARY A technique of immersion refractometry has been employed to compare the rates at which four species of nematodes lose water during desiccation at 0% r.h. Panagrellus redivivus and Ditylenchus myceliophagus showed little ability to control water loss, although in the latter species coiling helped slow the rate of drying. Ditylenchus dipsaci and Anguina tritici exhibited a much greater degree of control over water loss during desiccation, A. tritici being more successful. D. dipsaci revived from ‘wool’ showed a marked decrease in ability to control water loss when compared with freshly extracted worms. The results obtained have been compared with those from work using interference microscopy, and a critical assessment of the liquid paraffin technique is presented.

Abstract: Crosslinked poly(acryloylmorpholines) have been prepared in bead form by suspension polymerization of N-acryloylmorpholine and N,N′-methylenediacrylamide, respective molar ratios 10/1, in aqueous solution dispersed in liquid paraffin. The swelling properties of beads of two porosities, designated Enzacryl Gel K1 and Enzacryl Gel K2, were measured in a range of common solvents. Gels derived by swelling in both chloroform and tetrahydrofuran were evaluated as column packings for gel permeation chromatography. For Enzacryl Gel K1 and polystyrene solutes, molecular weight exclusion limits of approximately 4 × 103 and 6 × 102 were observed in chloroform and tetrahydrofuran, respectively. In the case of Enzacryl Gel K2, the corresponding exclusion limits were 104 and 5 × 103. Molecular weight fractionation ranges for both polystyrenes and polyethylene glycols are discussed in terms of gel structure.
