TL;DR: This report describes a simplified method for preparing multitumor sausage blocks (MTSBs) for use in immunohistochemical procedures, which involves procuring tissue at the time of gross specimen examination.
Abstract: This report describes a simplified method for preparing multitumor sausage blocks (MTSBs) for use in immunohistochemical procedures. Rather than relying on previously processed paraffin blocks as a source of material, this procedure involves procuring tissue at the time of gross specimen examination. The tissue is processed along with routine surgical pathologic material, and the paraffinized samples are placed in "storage cassettes" for easy cataloging and storage. Thin strips are cut from the tissue in the "storage cassettes" and combined by dripping liquid paraffin onto them while they are rolled between the thumbs and forefingers, somewhat like making a cigarette. This results in a tissue "log." Transverse sections of the "log" are embedded in paraffin blocks and used as MTSBs. Practical uses of MTSBs are discussed, and their role in quality assurance is stressed.

TL;DR: A facile strategy has been proposed for constructing silica SLIPSs that exhibit transferable performance, which endows the surface with the possibility of meeting the various requirements of different conditions and demonstrates the enormous value of the application of the coatings in many fields.
Abstract: Self-slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPSs) have been presented owing to their enormous number of potential applications and have widely attracted the attention of researchers in recent years. In comparison with superhydrophobic surfaces, SLIPSs not only exhibit interfacial performance that corresponds to superhydrophobicity but also do not require the construction of a complicated and delicate morphology. Here, a facile strategy has been proposed for constructing silica SLIPSs. Three common lubricants (perfluoropolyethers, liquid paraffin and ethyl oleate) were employed in this study. Using a facile brush process, the surface can be coated on a substrate, and, after infusion of the lubricant, the transformation from superhydrophobicity to self-slippage properties can be achieved. In addition, changing the kind of lubricant and adjusting the amount of nanoscale hybrid silica particles in the coating solution can modulate the surface transparency and interfacial characteristics, which makes the surface meet the various requirements of different service conditions. This transferable performance endows the surface with the possibility of meeting the various requirements of different conditions and demonstrates the enormous value of the application of the coatings in many fields.

TL;DR: In general irrespective of the fertilization method this study confirmed the findings in other mammalian species that the fertility of epididymal spermatozoa diminishes progressively from the distal to the proximal segments of the epididsymis.
Abstract: The results of a study of the penetration activity of mouse epididymal spermatozoa are described. Experiments were carried out with adult female and male F9 hybrids aged 8 to 18 weeks. Individual segments of the epididymis were successively removed starting with the caput and taking care to avoid contamination by spermatozoa from the more distal segments. The segments were immediately placed in 50 mcl culture medium in a watch-glass under a layer of liquid paraffin. The spermatozoa were released into the medium by gentle pressure on the tissue with dissecting needles. Superovulation was induced with 8 to 10 IU PMSG administered in 2 doses separated by a 12-hour interval. An injection of 25 IU HCG was given 45-50 hours after the first dose. After laparotomy inseminations were carried out by introducing 10 to 15 mcl sperm suspension into both uterine horns. The females were killed 6 to 6 1/2 hours after insemination and the ova were isolated mounted and fixed. Fertilization was effected in vitro by the method employed by Pavlok and McLaren. After incubation the material was fixed stained and evaluated. In general irrespective of the fertilization method this study confirmed the findings in other mammalian species that the fertility of epididymal spermatozoa diminishes progressively from the distal to the proximal segments of the epididymis.

TL;DR: Patients with an acute illness, undergoing surgery or suffering from perianal disease benefit from the early institution of bran to encourage the easy passage of soft stool and their use by patients should also be discouraged.
Abstract: Proprietary laxatives represent a multimillion dollar industry and are widely used by the apparently well population. They are traditionally classified into bulk laxatives, lubricants, stimulants, stool softeners, and osmotic laxatives. The latter 3 probably act mainly by favouring accumulation of fluids and electrolytes in the lumen of the gut. Magnesium-containing saline laxatives are believed to act by releasing cholecystokinin which, in turn, favours intraluminal fluid accumulation. Bran is not a proprietary laxative. It is a bulking agent with capacity to hold water in the stool, thereby improving bowel function. The lubricant, mineral oil (liquid paraffin), is obsolete.
