TL;DR: In this paper, an integrated system and method is provided for processing a service request for installation, maintenance or repair of a local loop maintained by a telecommunications company and providing locally switched service to a customer premise.
Abstract: An integrated system and method is provided for processing a service request for installation, maintenance or repair of a local loop maintained by a telecommunications company and providing locally switched service to a customer premise. The system includes a computer network that allows for inputting and processing customer information; generating a service request based upon customer information and information associated with the local loop; assigning to the service request an available appointment time for providing the requested service based upon updated information indicating the availability of qualified outside technicians; dispatching an available technician to the customer premise at or before the assigned appointment time to install or repair outside facilities associated with the local loop or to install or replace a special line conditioning termination equipment at a network interface for the customer premise when loop loss associated with the local loop is not maintained at an acceptable level for the locally switched service, processing completion information input by the technician associated with tasks performed to establish working service, including information indicating whether the special line conditioning termination equipment was installed or replaced; completing the service request once working service is established; storing computer information relating to locally switched services including information indicating whether line conditioning termination equipment is installed at the customer premise; and creating or updating the computer information stored in the computer memory means based upon information associated with the completed service request.

TL;DR: In this paper, the charge and collect-call functions of a public telephone are arranged automatically by a microcomputer system preferably connected on customer premises between the phone terminal instrument and the local loop, wherein control of said instrument, network signaling and call placement voice prompting of the call parties, recognition of responses from the parties and the network, and data communications with other computers are accomplished by the microcompter system without requiring human operator assistance or the transmission of calls over excessive distances to reach such an operator.
Abstract: The charge and collect-call functions of a public telephone are arranged automatically by a microcomputer system preferably connected on customer premises between the phone terminal instrument and the local loop, wherein control of said instrument, network signaling and call placement voice prompting of the call parties, recognition of responses from the parties and the network, call detail records of numbers and timings, and data communications with other computers are accomplished by the microcompter system without requiring human operator assistance or the transmission of calls over excessive distances to reach such an operator.

TL;DR: In this article, a high speed data stream over a plurality of relatively low bandwidth unshielded twisted copper pairs within the local loop plant or in any environment having a plurality-of-copper lines, such as on campuses, within large buildings, etc.
Abstract: A system for transporting a high speed data stream over a plurality of relatively low bandwidth unshielded twisted copper pairs within the local loop plant or in any environment having a plurality of copper lines, such as on campuses, within large buildings, etc. The copper twisted pairs are transformed from a plurality of low bandwidth, low reliability links into a high reliability, very high bandwidth long range communication channel utilizing optimized xDSL transmission technologies over the plurality of copper pairs. A transmit data processor perform scrambling, FEC encoding and interleaving on the data before it is divided and dispatched to the plurality of modem elements for transmission over the local loop plant, either bidirectionally or unidirectionally. On the receiving side, the individual data streams are collected, aggregated and a receive data processor performs de-interleaving, FEC decoding and de-interleaving, resulting in the high speed data stream originally transmitted. The system also includes means for increasing the performance of the xDSL modem elements including crosstalk cancellation, power and PSD control, data rate control and optimal routing of the transmitted signals within the twisted pair binders. Network elements located remotely on the other side of the plurality of copper pairs are provided electrical power. In addition, the system optionally multiplexes a plurality of low bandwidth telephony services over the high speed link using either TDM or FDM techniques.

TL;DR: In this paper, a system and method of communicating voice and data via a local packet network (LPN) to and from a customer site is described, where multiple telephone calls with the customer site can be supported by the RDT over a single local loop link connected to the LPN.
Abstract: A system and method of communicating voice and data via a local packet network (LPN) (60) to and from a customer site (7). A remote digital terminal (RDT) (100) is provided at a customer site to interface a plurality of phone devices (10) and/or data devices (computer or LAN computers) (12) with the LPN via a local loop link, such as a Digital Subscriber Line or a wireless local loop (24). A host digital terminal (HDT) (200) is provided at a control site within or connected to the LPN that coordinates the communication of voice calls between the RDT and a PSTN switch (32) via the LPN and that coordinates the communication of data between the RDT and a data network within or without the LPN. Multiple telephone calls with the customer site can be supported by the RDT over a single local loop link connected to the LPN.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a system for proactive maintenance of telephone lines using information from a Dynamic Network Analyzer (DNA) and information from Loop Facilities and Control System (LFC).
Abstract: Methods and systems for proactively maintaining a telephone system local loop. One embodiment includes communicating with a communications network and acquiring information associated with pressure or flow sensors along fiber optic cables. Proactive maintenance of the fiber optic cables is predicted using the information associated with pressure or flow sensors. The embodiment may further include generating and dispatching work order information describing the predicted proactive maintenance. The embodiment may also include predicting proactive maintenance of telephone lines using information from a Dynamic Network Analyzer and using information from a Loop Facilities and Control System. Another embodiment includes a system for predicting proactive maintenance of a telephone system local loop. This embodiment includes a Pressure Alarms and Reports System Module, a database stored in memory, and a processor. The Pressure Alarms and Reports System Module communicates with a communications network and acquires at least one of i) pressure information associated with fiber optic cables and ii) flow information associated with fiber optic cables. The database stores the acquired information. The processor processes information stored in the database and generates predicted proactive maintenance.
