TL;DR: The facies of the deposits have been proved to be marine according to Ostracods, as well as to the sporo-pollen complex of submarine deposits of Chungming, Shanghai today.
Abstract: Spores and pollen of the following plants have been obtained from the Quaternary depositsof Nantung: Selaginella, Ophioglossum, Osmunda, Lygodium, Cibotium, Cyathea, Adiantum,Dryoptieris, Cyclophorous, Onychium, Polypodium, Pteridium, Pteris, Polypodiaceae, Salvinia,? Marsilea, Fungi, Pinaceae (Abies, Pinus, Picea, Tsuga, Keteleeria, Larix), Ephedra, Pterocarya,Betula, Quercus, Ulmus, Liquidambar, Tilia, Rhus, Ericaceae (? Cassiope), Caprifoliaceae(Lonicera), Chenopodium, Leguminosae, Labiatae, Saxifragaceae, ? Cyperacae, Typha, Ranunculus,Polygonum, Compositae (Artemisia, Bidens), etc. Many indeterminable spores and pollen arefound. According to the sporo-pollen spectra, the sediments may be divided into two parts. Thespectra of the lower part are dominated by pollen of Abies; whereas the upper part by pollen ofPinus, and many spores of ferns. The facies of the deposits have been proved to be marine according to Ostracods, as well as tothe sporo-pollen complex of submarine deposits of Chungming (崇明), Shanghai today. Thespectra of the upper part of Quaternary deposits of Nantung are very similar in components tothat of the present submarine deposits.
