TL;DR: In this article, the aggregation and phase behavior in water of several triblock copolymers of poly(oxethylene)poly(oxypropylene)-poly (oxyethylene)) [(EO) x (PO) y (EO)x ] has been studied.
Abstract: The aggregation and phase behavior in water of several triblock copolymers of poly(oxethylene)poly(oxypropylene)-poly(oxyethylene) [(EO) x (PO) y (EO) x ] has been studied. The y-values of the compounds ranged from 16 to 70 and the x:y ratios from 0.1 to 2.5. All studied compounds form micelles and lyotropic liquid crystalline phases. Fow constant temperature the critical micelle concentrations (cmc) of the compounds decrease exponentially with y. The energy increment for the transfer of a PO group from the aqueous to the micellar state is about (0.25±0.05) kT. The cmc values for all compounds decrease strongly with increasing temperature. As a consequence the solutions undergo a monomermicelle transition for constant concentration and increasing temperature

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a NMR study of the transition of a mixture of two Isomeric Cyano-Ester homologous series, showing that the phase transition of one of the two isomeric versions of this series is a transition of the other.

TL;DR: A liquid crystal system was used for the fabrication of a highly ordered composite material from genetically engineered M13 bacteriophage and zinc sulfide nanocrystals, which spontaneously evolved a self-supporting hybrid film material.
Abstract: A liquid crystal system was used for the fabrication of a highly ordered composite material from genetically engineered M13 bacteriophage and zinc sulfide (ZnS) nanocrystals. The bacteriophage, which formed the basis of the self-ordering system, were selected to have a specific recognition moiety for ZnS crystal surfaces. The bacteriophage were coupled with ZnS solution precursors and spontaneously evolved a self-supporting hybrid film material that was ordered at the nanoscale and at the micrometer scale into approximately 72-micrometer domains, which were continuous over a centimeter length scale. In addition, suspensions were prepared in which the lyotropic liquid crystalline phase behavior of the hybrid material was controlled by solvent concentration and by the use of a magnetic field.

TL;DR: In this paper, the use of liquid crystalline plating solutions could be a versatile way to create mesoporous electrodes for batteries, fuel cells, electrochemical capacitors, and sensors.
Abstract: The lyotropic liquid crystalline phases of surfactants exhibit a rich polymorphism of structures that have long-range periodicities and whose characteristic repeat distances range from 2 to 15 nanometers. The electrochemical reduction of platinum salts confined to the aqueous environments of these phases leads to the deposition of platinum films that have a well-defined long-ranged porous nanostructure and high specific surface areas. These results suggest that the use of liquid crystalline plating solutions could be a versatile way to create mesoporous electrodes for batteries, fuel cells, electrochemical capacitors, and sensors.
