Abstract: A magnetic tape cassette in which critical parts subject to wear are coated with a hard coating such as an ultraviolet-cured resin. Among other effects, the generation of rubbed-off powder is reduced, thereby reducing the amount of data drop-out. Also, the case of the cassette is protected from damage.

Abstract: A track following servo system is disclosed for use with magnetic tape systems in which magnetic servo track patterns contain transitions recorded at more than on azimuthal orientation across the width of the servo track. The timing of a signal derived from reading at any point across the width of such a pattern varies continuously as the read head is moved across the servo track. The pattern is read by a servo read head whose width is small compared to the servo track pattern. The combination of a wide servo pattern and a narrow servo read head offers excellent position sensing linearity and dynamic range. In the preferred embodiment, the servo read head is also narrow with respect to the data tracks, which provides the additional advantages of superior immunity to position sensing errors caused by defects or temporal variations in the servo read head, defects in the servo pattern on the tape, wear of the head or tape, or debris collection on the head or tape. Position sensing with this system is achieved by deriving a ratio of two servo pattern intervals and therefore is insensitive to tape speed during reading. The servo patterns may include spacing intervals recognizable for error detection and correction purposes. Servo tracks are recorded using a patterned multiple gap servo write head whose magnetic gaps have geometries appropriate to generate the desired servo patterns. The patterned gaps of the servo write head are produced by photolithographically defined electroplating of permalloy on a ferrite ring head structure.

Abstract: An optical disk storage system emulates a magnetic tape subsystem by virtual addressing of data recorded on write once optical disk media having a predetermined group of available sectors for rewriting a disk ID, a predetermined plurality of bands of available sectors for rewriting a virtual tape directory to virtual tape VSNs, and, available sectors for rewriting virtual tape maps and rewriting user records, the tape maps have data portions for simulating tape marks and interblock gap and for addressing blocks of data within the virtual tapes, the virtual tape directory has pointers for pointing to tape maps, and the system rewrites the tape directory, tape maps and user records so as to function as a rewritable magnetic tape.

Abstract: Acquisition of truck axle and gross weight information is necessary for structural and maintenance requirements of bridges and pavements. A system is described combining traffic sensors and strain gages on highway bridge girders to obtain axle and gross weights. A weight prediction algorithm is derived herein that filters out the dynamic components of bridge response and obtains the equivalent static axle weights by a least-square error minimization. It utilizes self-balancing signal conditioners, magnetic tape switches, analog-digital converters, and a minicomputer to record field data on magnetic tape. Output is subsequently obtained on a digital computer. The system showed predictions of gross truck weight and tandem axles consistent with calibration trucks and random traffic. The paper also describes modifications of the system that would allow its routine use in obtaining weigh-in-motion truck data and would also permit weight processing in the field.
