TL;DR: In this paper, the formation of surface films may cause long-term problems by reducing the activity of the metal surfaces or by causing the clogging of pores, and it was found that anaerobic corrosion of iron leads to the initial formation of ferrous hydroxide at the beginning of the reaction.

TL;DR: The mechanisms that control hydrogen generation and magnetite formation during serpentinization of mantle peridotite remain poorly understood as discussed by the authors, however, some completely serpentinized peridots have as much as 6.15 wt% magnetite, whereas others are nearly magnetite free.
Abstract: Serpentinization of mantle peridotite generates molecular hydrogen that can be exploited by microorganisms to gain metabolic energy; however, the mechanisms that control hydrogen generation and magnetite formation during serpentinization remain poorly understood. We have examined partly to completely serpentinized peridotites recovered during the Ocean Drilling Program and find a remarkable variation in the abundance of magnetite. Some completely serpentinized peridotites have as much as 6.15 wt% magnetite, whereas others are nearly magnetite free (

TL;DR: Magnetite nanoparticles were prepared through a solvothermal reduction approach in the presence of ethylene glycol, oleic acid and trioctylphosphine oxide or hexadecylamine.
Abstract: Magnetite nanoparticles were prepared through a solvothermal reduction approach in the presence of ethylene glycol, oleic acid and trioctylphosphine oxide or hexadecylamine. The size of the magnetite nanoparticles can be controlled easily through tailoring surfactants in the system. Transmission electron microscopy images indicate that the average sizes of magnetite nanoparticles are 8 and 11 nm, depending on the surfactant. The far IR spectra further demonstrate that the products are magnetite instead of hematite. Superparamagnetism and the effect of σ-donor and π-acceptor type surfactants on the magnetic properties of the nanoscale materials have been investigated.

TL;DR: In this article, measurements have been made of coercive force, susceptibility, isothermal remanence, thermoremanence and thermal and alternating field demagnetization of annealed magnetite powders in nine size ranges from 1·5 μ to 120 μ.
Abstract: Measurements have been made of coercive force, susceptibility, isothermal remanence, thermoremanence and thermal and alternating field demagnetization of annealed magnetite powders in nine size ranges from 1·5 μ to 120 μ. The samples were dispersed in plaster to occupy a few per cent by volume of the specimens and thus to simulate the magnetic properties of rocks. The results are compared with the theories of rock magnetism. Susceptibility agrees precisely with theory and saturation remanence has the same dependence on coercive force as the theory. The observed values of thermoremanence are smaller than expected but show a size dependence consistent with the predicted appearance of pseudo-single domain effects at small grain size.

TL;DR: In this paper, the magnetite particle size is controlled by variation of pH and temperature and the increase of oxidation increases with decreasing particle size, and the variation of magnetite saturation magnetizations with particle size was interpreted using a magnetic core-shell particle model.
