TL;DR: In this paper, a semi-active control scheme for the reduction of environmentally induced vibration in constructed facilities by way of a neuro-fuzzy technique is presented and tested in a numerical study that involves two types of building models.
Abstract: This paper described a new approach for the reduction of environmentally induced vibration in constructed facilities by way of a neuro-fuzzy technique. The new control technique is presented and tested in a numerical study that involves two types of building models. The energy of each building is dissipated through magnetorheological (MR) dampers whose damping properties are continuously updated by a fuzzy controller. This semi-active control scheme relies on the development of a correlation between the accelerations of the building (controller input) and the voltage applied to the MR damper (controller output). This correlation forms the basis for the development of an intelligent neuro-fuzzy control strategy. To establish a context for assessing the effectiveness of the semi-active control scheme, responses to earthquake excitation are compared with passive strategies that have similar authority for control. According to numerical simulation, MR dampers are less effective control mechanisms than passive dampers with respect to a single degree of freedom (DOF) building model. On the other hand, MR dampers are predicted to be superior when used with multiple DOF structures for reduction of lateral acceleration.

TL;DR: In this paper, an improved damping apparatus that utilizes a fluid having a viscosity that may be varied by the application of an electromagnetic field, such as a magnetorheological fluid or an electrorheological fluids, to provide the damping response is presented.
Abstract: An improved damping apparatus that utilizes a fluid having a viscosity that may be varied by the application of an electromagnetic field, such as a magnetorheological fluid or an electrorheological fluid, to provide the damping response. The damping apparatus includes a linear to rotary conversion mechanism which comprises a translatable member that is adapted for linear translation in a forward and a reverse direction and a rotatable member comprising a rotatable shaft that is rotatably coupled to the translatable member; wherein translation of the translatable member in one of the forward or the reverse directions produces a forward or a reverse rotation of the rotatable member and shaft, respectively. The damping apparatus also includes a damping mechanism which comprises a hub that is fixed to the shaft, a means for generating a variable electromagnetic field in response to an applied electrical signal that may be continuously varied in response to an input signal that is representative of a desired damping force and a fluid having a viscosity that may be continuously varied by application of the electromagnetic field that is in touching contact with the hub. Application of the variable electromagnetic field to the fluid produces changes in the viscosity of the fluid that in turn provides variable resistance to rotation of the hub and resistance to translation of the translatable member, thereby providing a damping apparatus with a continuously variable damping response.

Abstract: This brief introduction describes the mechanical, rheological and magnetic properties of the magnetorheological (MR) fluids for feasible engineering applications. The typical modes of exploiting this technology are shown and discussed. An increasing number of industrial applications illustrate how the MR fluids peculiar properties may be used to provide optimal performance in semi active damping and dissipative devices.

TL;DR: In this paper, magnetic elastomers based on immiscible silicon rubber/polystyrene (SR/PS) blend matrix were fab- ricated successfully via cosolvent method and the MR effect, electric and mechanical properties, and the micro- structures of the corresponding materials were studied.
Abstract: Magnetorheological (MR) elastomers, which are mainly composed of magnetic particles and elastic poly- mer, are a new kind of smart materials whose modulus can be controlled by changing the strength of magnetic fields. In this article, MR elastomers based on immiscible silicon rubber/polystyrene (SR/PS) blend matrix were fab- ricated successfully via cosolvent method and the MR effect, electric and mechanical properties, and the micro- structures of the corresponding materials were studied. SEM studies showed that the dispersion of iron particles in blend matrix were different from that in single polymer, which could be further proved by the different electric conductivity. The MR effect of MR elastomers based on blend matrix varied with the different ratios of SR and PS, which was discussed in detail from the special dispersion of iron particles and of zero-modulus of MR elastomers. In addition, the MR elastomers based on SR/PS blend matrix had enhanced mechanical properties, which made them more hopeful to be applied in practice. 2006 Wiley Period-
