TL;DR: In this paper, a sensor member with a curved surface installed adjacent the outlet of a conveyor is mounted for pivotment about a transverse axis and is subject to the moment resulting from the material flow along its surface.
Abstract: of EP0753720A device (21) for metering the mass flow of bulk material, such as grain or other crop material, comprises a sensor member (51) with a curved surface (53) installed adjacent the outlet of a conveyor (12) The sensor member (51) is mounted for pivotment about a transverse axis (P) and is subject to the moment (M) resulting from the material flow along its surface (53) A spring means (66) is provided to keep the sensor member (51) in zero load position The displacement of the sensor member (51) is proportional to the mass flow rate Changing friction coefficients mu between the bulk material and the surface (53) will affect the flow pattern therealong, but an array (70) of pivot points can be found about which the measured moments (M) remain substantially insensitive to these flow changes Alternatively a force component may be sensed of the material flow on the sensor surface (53) in a particular direction A direction can be found wherein the force component is equally insensitive to flow changes caused by friction coefficient changes Such metering devices may be used in grain and forage harvesters, wherein they need less recalibration under varying harvesting conditions

Abstract: Friction stir spot welding (FSSW) is a new metal-joining process, and a numerical simulation code to calculate optimal welding conditions is desired. In this paper, we analyzed temperature distribution and plastic deformation flow during the FSSW process with the fluid flow model and the elastic-plastic deformation model using the particle method. Spot welds are made with a cylindrical pin tool having flat shoulder with a fixed tool rotational speed. Simulation results predict an axisymmetric temperature distribution with the temperature below the tool in the region of 300 °C. The material flow predicted by the elastic-plastic deformation model is similar to experimental results. The model predicts the material flow at the pin periphery is in the upward direction. Near the shoulder, there are two flow patterns observed - beneath the shoulder, the material is pushed downward due to the force acting from the shoulder face, whereas on the shoulder periphery the material flows upward and outward due to extrusion of the material that is caused by the shoulder plunge. This extruded material shows up on the specimen surface as burr.

TL;DR: In this paper, an upright shell adapted to contain the material to be cooled, a mixing hopper arranged within the upper portion of the shell for mixing together particles of the material of different size and air distributing means within the lower portion of a shell for releasing cooling air into the material.
Abstract: Apparatus for cooling calcined or sintered particulate material discharged from a rotary kiln or other pyro-processing system. The apparatus includes an upright shell adapted to contain the material to be cooled, a mixing hopper arranged within the upper portion of the shell for mixing together particles of the material of different size and air distributing means arranged within the lower portion of the shell for releasing cooling air into the material. The apparatus is configured so that the cooling air moves counter to the direction of material flow.
