TL;DR: It is shown that the mathematical programming representation used for discrete-event systems with a continuous time and mixed continuous-discrete state space is also a viable method for performance evaluation and optimization of continuous material flow systems.
Abstract: This study presents a mathematical programming representation of discrete-event systems with a continuous time and mixed continuous-discrete state space. In particular, continuous material flow production systems are considered. A mathematical programming representation is used to generate simulated sample realizations of the system and also to optimize control parameters. The mathematical programming approach has been used in the literature for performance evaluation and optimization of discrete material flow production systems. In order to show the applicability of the same approach to continuous material flow systems, this article focuses on optimal production flow rate control problems for a continuous material flow system with an unreliable station and deterministic demand. These problems exhibit most of the dynamics observed in various continuous flow productions systems: flow dynamics, machine failures and repairs, changing flow rates due to system status, and control. Moreover, these problems incl...

TL;DR: This paper draws upon learning from the aerospace, automotive and retail sectors to provide a framework for the modelling and simulation of supply chains, the processes that occur within them and the products that flow along them.
Abstract: This paper draws upon learning from the aerospace, automotive and retail sectors to provide a framework for the modelling and simulation of supply chains, the processes that occur within them and the products that flow along them. The framework allows an integrated description of products and processes in a supply chain. Such a description could be used to support analyses and simulations that take account of the supply chain and its constituent products and processes. The framework itself is based on a data model that uses a single pattern for the representation of structured data. This pattern is used three times for supply chain, process and product. The descriptive capability of the framework is demonstrated through a case study that is taken from the packaging industry.

TL;DR: In this article, the effects of flash allowance and bar size on the die filling and required load were studied, and it was observed that the greater the flash allowance, the larger was the forming load.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors developed an integrated algorithm to design the facilities and material handling systems, focusing on single-loop AGV systems, with the objective of minimizing total material flow distance among all departments.
Abstract: Layout design and material handling system design are two of the major aspects of facility planning. Although both aspects directly influence each other, the classical approach to the layout design is carried out in two separate steps: in the first step the block layout, i.e. the location of the departments in the workshop, is constructed, and in the second step, the material handling system is designed. The separate optimisation of these two aspects of the problem leads to solutions that can be far from the global optimum. In this paper, we develop an integrated algorithm to design the facilities and material handling systems. We focus on single-loop AGV systems. The proposed algorithm determines the block layout, AGV single-loop flow path and pick-up delivery stations, simultaneously. The associated from–to chart and the area of departments are the principal inputs of the algorithm. The objective is minimising total material flow distance among all departments. The results of our computational experimen...
