TL;DR: Energy transport across a magnetic field by plasma and ion waves is shown to be an important process even in thermal equilibrium, because their propagation is uninhibited by the magnetic field and their long mean free path.

TL;DR: In this paper, the effect of stopping muons on the attenuation coefficient of the neutron monitor was investigated and it was shown that the effect is independent of the solar activity and is in good correspondence with results obtained from Monte Carlo calculations.
Abstract: By means of data obtained during 1969 and 1971 with an airborne neutron monitor the pressure, cutoff rigidity, and solar modulation dependence of the attenuation coefficient of the neutron monitor were investigated. Special attention was given to the experimental and statistical errors introduced by the measurements and analyses. The pressure, cutoff rigidity, and solar modulation dependence of the attenuation coefficient are discussed and compared with other results and finally incorporated into a single empirical equation. It is shown that the effect of stopping muons on the attenuation coefficient of the neutron monitor may be neglected in transforming to a vertical attenuation coefficient. It is also confirmed that the specific or partial attenuation coefficient is independent of the solar activity and is in good correspondence with results obtained from Monte Carlo calculations.

TL;DR: In this article, the conductance of single-shell carbon nanotubes is numerically calculated in the effective mass approximation by treating scattering from impurities exactly, and it is shown that the magnetic field dependence of conductance depends sensitively on the mean free path.
Abstract: The conductance of single-shell carbon nanotubes is numerically calculated in the effective-mass approximation by treating scattering from impurities exactly. The magnetic-field dependence of the conductance depends sensitively on the mean free path. When the mean free path is sufficiently large, undoped metallic nanotubes exhibit a large positive magnetoresistance in agreement with the prediction of the Boltzmann transport equation. This positive magnetoresistance disappears when the mean free path becomes comparable to the circumference length.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors describe the manufacture and use of a silicon K α X-ray source giving a characteristic photon of energy 17 39.4 eV, and show that the transmission function of the ESCA 3 spectrometer (V.G. Scientific Ltd.) is close to the inverse of the function describing the inelastic mean free path over the kinetic energy range 170-1450 eV.
