Abstract: The conference covered general sessions on AI techniques suitable for engineering applications, e.g. knowledge representation, natural language, probability, design methodologies and constraints. This was followed by sessions covering application in mechanical engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering, and general engineering. Further sessions covered robotics and tools and techniques for building knowledge based systems.

TL;DR: Design must continue to be the major aspect of an engineering education in the computer area because the algorithms that process information span the hardware-software spectrum and bridge several conceptual levels.
Abstract: Design must continue to be the major aspect of an engineering education in the computer area. There is a basic design methodology common to all areas of engineering, but for every branch of engineering there are some unique aspects to the design methodology. Design in the computer science and engineering field is dominated by the processing of information rather than of physical substances or energy. Design methods in computer science and engineering, or CSE, are detemined by the different kinds ofand means of conveying information. The algorithms that process information span the hardware-software spectrum and bridge several conceptual levels.

TL;DR: In this article, a study on vibration control using a software servo system for a mechanical structure which varies the dynamic characters is presented, which is based on the use of linear quadratic optimal control (LQ control) theory.
Abstract: Advanced micro-processer permits high speed performance in numerical caliculation and progress of the mechatronics techniques. The software servo is one of the most promising control methods for mechanical systems because of its wide applicability in programing. This paper presents a study on vibration control using a software servo system for a mechanical structure which varies the dynamic characters. The design procedure for vibration control is based on the use of linear quadratic optimal control (LQ control) theory. The effectiveness of this control theory is demonstrated by the results of numerical analysis and experiments, and it is shown that the weight parameter has an optimal value for good vibration control.

TL;DR: A single metric—the system reliability—is proposed as an appropriate measure for exploring tradeoffs among a potentially-large design space and is presented as a suitable measure for understanding theoretical limitations and the scope of feasible designs.
Abstract: We view the design of fault-tolerant computing systems as an engineering endeavor. As such, this activity requires understanding the theoretical limitations and the scope of the feasible designs. We survey the impact that various environment characteristics and design choices have on the resultant system properties. We propose a single metric—the system reliability—as an appropriate measure for exploring tradeoffs among a potentially-large design space.
