Abstract: This paper describes a new approach to low level image processing; in particular, edge and corner detection and structure preserving noise reduction. Non-linear filtering is used to define which parts of the image are closely related to each individual pixel; each pixel has associated with it a local image region which is of similar brightness to that pixel. The new feature detectors are based on the minimization of this local image region, and the noise reduction method uses this region as the smoothing neighbourhood. The resulting methods are accurate, noise resistant and fast. Details of the new feature detectors and of the new noise reduction method are described, along with test results.

Abstract: Computational techniques involving contrast enhancement and noise filtering on two-dimensional image arrays are developed based on their local mean and variance. These algorithms are nonrecursive and do not require the use of any kind of transform. They share the same characteristics in that each pixel is processed independently. Consequently, this approach has an obvious advantage when used in real-time digital image processing applications and where a parallel processor can be used. For both the additive and multiplicative cases, the a priori mean and variance of each pixel is derived from its local mean and variance. Then, the minimum mean-square error estimator in its simplest form is applied to obtain the noise filtering algorithms. For multiplicative noise a statistical optimal linear approximation is made. Experimental results show that such an assumption yields a very effective filtering algorithm. Examples on images containing 256 × 256 pixels are given. Results show that in most cases the techniques developed in this paper are readily adaptable to real-time image processing.

Abstract: In this paper, we propose a novel type of explicit image filter - guided filter. Derived from a local linear model, the guided filter generates the filtering output by considering the content of a guidance image, which can be the input image itself or another different image. The guided filter can perform as an edge-preserving smoothing operator like the popular bilateral filter [1], but has better behavior near the edges. It also has a theoretical connection with the matting Laplacian matrix [2], so is a more generic concept than a smoothing operator and can better utilize the structures in the guidance image. Moreover, the guided filter has a fast and non-approximate linear-time algorithm, whose computational complexity is independent of the filtering kernel size. We demonstrate that the guided filter is both effective and efficient in a great variety of computer vision and computer graphics applications including noise reduction, detail smoothing/enhancement, HDR compression, image matting/feathering, haze removal, and joint upsampling.

Abstract: In the past, spatial filtering in coherent optical systems has been limited by the inability to realize practically a general complex filter. This paper describes a technique for realizing such a filter, and gives an application of spatial filtering to the problem of detecting isolated signals in a variety of noise backgrounds. The experimental results obtained to date indicate that this technique provides an excellent two-dimensional filtering capability that will play a key role in such problems as shape recognition and signal detection.
