TL;DR: An iterative algorithm that truncates the extreme values of samples in the filter window to a dynamic threshold is proposed and the resulting nonlinear filter shows some merits of both the arithmetic mean and the order statistical median.
Abstract: The arithmetic mean and the order statistical median are two fundamental operations in signal and image processing. They have their own merits and limitations in noise attenuation and image structure preservation. This paper proposes an iterative algorithm that truncates the extreme values of samples in the filter window to a dynamic threshold. The resulting nonlinear filter shows some merits of both the fundamental operations. Some dynamic truncation thresholds are proposed that guarantee the filter output, starting from the mean, to approach the median of the input samples. As a by-product, this paper unveils some statistics of a finite data set as the upper bounds of the deviation of the median from the mean. Some stopping criteria are suggested to facilitate edge preservation and noise attenuation for both the long- and short-tailed distributions. Although the proposed iterative truncated mean (ITM) algorithm is not aimed at the median, it offers a way to estimate the median by simple arithmetic computing. Some properties of the ITM filters are analyzed and experimentally verified on synthetic data and real images.

TL;DR: A partition-based adaptive vector filter that is optimized off-line for each partition cell to achieve the best tradeoff between noise suppression and structure preservation is proposed for the restoration of corrupted digital color images.
Abstract: A partition-based adaptive vector filter is proposed for the restoration of corrupted digital color images. The novelty of the filter lies in its unique three-stage adaptive estimation. The local image structure is first estimated by a series of center-weighted reference filters. Then the distances between the observed central pixel and estimated references are utilized to classify the local inputs into one of preset structure partition cells. Finally, a weighted filtering operation, indexed by the partition cell, is applied to the estimated references in order to restore the central pixel value. The weighted filtering operation is optimized off-line for each partition cell to achieve the best tradeoff between noise suppression and structure preservation. Recursive filtering operation and recursive weight training are also investigated to further boost the restoration performance. The proposed filter has demonstrated satisfactory results in suppressing many distinct types of noise in natural color images. Noticeable performance gains are demonstrated over other prior-art methods in terms of standard objective measurements, the visual image quality and the computational complexity.

TL;DR: This review paper deals with the methods to improve underwater image enhancement techniques, image enhancement using median filter which enhances the image and help to estimate the depth map and improve quality by removing noise particles with the help of different techniques.
Abstract: This review paper deals with the methods to improve underwater image enhancement techniques, the processing of underwater image captured is necessary because the quality of underwater images affect and these image leads some serious problems when compared to images from a clearer environment. A lot of noise occurs due to low contrast, poor visibility conditions (absorption of natural light), non uniform lighting and little color variations, pepper noise and blur effect in the underwater images because of all these reasons number of methods are existing to cure these underwater images different filtering techniques are also available in the literature for processing and enhancement of underwater images one of them is image enhancement using median filter which enhances the image and help to estimate the depth map and improve quality by removing noise particles with the help of different techniques, and the other is RGB Color Level Stretching have used. Forward USM technique can also be used for image enhancement.
