TL;DR: The conclusion can be drawn that the alkaloids present in all the plants belonging to this family, are responsible for the toxic and for the therapeutically active effects attributed to the Amaryllidaceae.
Abstract: Different aspects of the Amaryllidaceae family as medicinal plants are discussed. The botanical and chemical characteristics are presented as well as the use of these herbs as medicinal plants in the past. Subsequently, a review is given of the pharmacological effects of some compounds isolated from the Amaryllidaceae and of some crude extracts of these plants. The conclusion can be drawn that the alkaloids present in all the plants belonging to this family, are responsible for the toxic and for the therapeutically active effects attributed to the Amaryllidaceae.
