TL;DR: The type of information in metadata for one type of file differs from the type of metadata for another type of a file as discussed by the authors, and the metadata from files created by several different software applications are captured and the captured metadata is searched.
Abstract: Systems and methods for managing data, such as metadata. In one exemplary method, metadata from files created by several different software applications are captured, and the captured metadata is searched. The type of information in metadata for one type of file differs from the type of information in metadata for another type of file. Other methods are described and data processing systems and machine readable media are also described.

TL;DR: In this article, a crawler service periodically updates the registry by polling the information on each server associated with registered metadata, and the resolver process provides to the client the location corresponding to the network resource name.
Abstract: Mechanisms for associating metadata with network resources, and for locating the network resources in a language-independent manner, are disclosed. Owners of network resources define metadata that describes each network resource. The metadata may include a natural language name of the network resource, its location, its language, its region or intended audience, and other descriptive information. The owners register the metadata in a registry. A copy of the metadata is stored on a server associated with a group of the network resources. A copy of the metadata is stored in a registry that is indexed at a central location. A crawler service periodically updates the registry by polling the information on each server associated with registered metadata. To locate a selected network resource, a client provides the name of the network resource to a resolver process. The resolver process provides to the client the network resource location corresponding to the network resource name. Multiple metadata mappings can be established for the same network resource, in which each mapping stores a name expressed in a different natural language. Accordingly, network resources can be located merely by providing the name of the network resource in any natural language that is convenient for the client.

TL;DR: A system and method of the present invention allow users to access, manage, and edit information about content data, often referred to as metadata as discussed by the authors, which is collected from various sources, added, and maintained in a metadata database.
Abstract: A system and method of the present invention allow users to access, manage, and edit information about content data, often referred to as metadata. Metadata is collected from various sources, added, and maintained in a metadata database. In addition, metadata is dynamically read from the metadata database and dynamically displayed in a graphical user interface in an organized manner, such as a hierarchical tree. In the graphical user interface, a user may add, delete, and/or modify the metadata. As the user changes the metadata, the metadata database is updated and the user's changes are propagated throughout the graphical user interface such that the hierarchical tree is displays the changed metadata.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors describe a system in which a media browser, operating as a software application on a user terminal or preferably a server for a number of users, provides a user with a single user interface that facilitates browsing and searching different metadata collections over the Internet.
Abstract: A system is described in which a media browser ( 101 ), operating as a software application on a user terminal or preferably a server for a number of users, provides a user with a single user interface that facilitates browsing and searching different metadata collections over the Internet ( 102 ). A metadata server ( 212 ) is associated with each of the metadata collections. When the metadata server ( 212 ) receives a request from the media browser ( 101 ), the metadata server ( 212 ) interprets the request and replies with a description that satisfies the request and according to a predetermined scheme. The description contains at least one link which represents a return link which represents a return request to the metadata server ( 212 ). Specifically disclosed are methods ( 2000 ) for recording user location preferences at a service and using one or more lists of such preferences to focus searching responses to statistically desirable material. Monitoring the validity of a bookmarked location is also described.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors propose an extensible framework for the automatic extraction and transformation of metadata into logical annotations, where metadata imbedding within a media file is extracted by a type-specific parsing module which is loaded and executed based on the mimetype of the media file being described.
Abstract: An extensible framework for the automatic extraction and transformation of metadata into logical annotations. Metadata imbedded within a media file is extracted by a type-specific parsing module which is loaded and executed based on the mimetype of the media file being described. A content processor extracts information, typically in the form of time-based samples, from the media content. An auxiliary processing step is performed to collect additional metadata describing the media file from sources external to the file. All of the metadata thus collected is combined into a set of logical annotations, which may be supplemented by summary data generated from the metadata already collected. The annotations are then formatted into a standardized form, preferably XML, which is then mapped into a database schema. The database object also stores the source XML data as well as the original media file in addition to the annotation metadata. The system provides unified metadata repositories, which can then be used for indexing and searching.
