TL;DR: In designing and building the combined product, this paper identified several real-world issues in using a pipelined database system in a distributed environment, and overcame several interesting design challenges that were not contemplated by the original research prototype.
Abstract: HP's Store All with Express Query is a scalable commercial file archiving product that offers sophisticated file metadata management and search capabilities [3]. A new REST API enables fast, efficient searching to find all files that meet a given set of metadata criteria and the ability to tag files with custom metadata fields. The product brings together two significant systems: a scale out file system and a metadata database based on LazyBase [10]. In designing and building the combined product, we identified several real-world issues in using a pipelined database system in a distributed environment, and overcame several interesting design challenges that were not contemplated by the original research prototype. This paper highlights our experiences.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors propose a dynamic utilization of condensing metadata enabled by condensing information being communicated to/from a mobile device, where the information is condensed responsive to condensing meta-data and uncondensed using the metadata.
Abstract: Dynamic utilization of condensing metadata is enabled by condensing information being communicated to/from a mobile device. The communication exchange occurs between a mobile device and an internet service, and it involves a mobile internet service proxy. The information is condensed responsive to condensing metadata and uncondensed using the condensing metadata. In an example embodiment, condensing metadata comprises encoding metadata for tags and compression metadata for other data. In a first described implementation, a mobile internet service proxy effectuates a static installation of condensing metadata to the mobile device from the internet service. In a second described implementation, the internet service lacks condensing metadata. The mobile internet service proxy therefore retrieves the schema defining the relevant information and dynamically generates condensing metadata. This dynamically-generated metadata is copied to the mobile device so that condensed data may be communicated at least between the mobile device and the mobile internet service proxy.

TL;DR: A new generic metadata model is described, called CAM Metamodel, that merges altogether information about content, services, physical and technical environment in order to enable homogenous delivery and consumption of content.
Abstract: This paper describes a new generic metadata model, called CAM Metamodel, that merges altogether information about content, services, physical and technical environment in order to enable homogenous delivery and consumption of content. We introduce a metadata model that covers all these aspects and which can be easily extended so as to absorb new types of models and standards. We ensure this flexibility by introducing an abstract metamodel, which defines structured archetypes for metadata and metadata containers. The metamodel is the foundation for the technical metadata specification. We also introduce new structures in the abstract and core metamodels supporting the management of distributed community created metadata.

TL;DR: How resources are represented and managed in the Knowledge Grid, a framework for Grid-enabled distributed data mining, is discussed, including how XML-based metadata is used to describe data mining tools, data sources, mining models, and execution plans.
Abstract: The Grid is an infrastructure for resource sharing and coordinated use of those resources in dynamic heterogeneous distributed environments. The effective use of a Grid requires the definition of metadata for managing the heterogeneity of involved resources that include computers, data, network facilities, and software tools provided by different organizations. Metadata management becomes a key issue when complex applications, such as data-intensive simulations and data mining applications, are executed on a Grid. This paper discusses metadata models for heterogeneous resource management in Grid-based data mining applications. In particular, it discusses how resources are represented and managed in the Knowledge Grid, a framework for Grid-enabled distributed data mining. The paper illustrates how XML-based metadata is used to describe data mining tools, data sources, mining models, and execution plans, and how metadata is used for the design and execution of distributed knowledge discovery applications on Grids.
