TL;DR: A survey on metadata conducted at the end of 2007 received over 400 answers and helped the authors to identify major issues and concerns regarding metadata that should be addressed in the IFLA Guidelines for Digital Libraries.
Abstract: A survey on metadata conducted at the end of 2007 received over 400 answers from 49 countries all over the world. It helped the authors to identify major issues and concerns regarding metadata that should be addressed in the IFLA Guidelines for Digital Libraries. The questionnaire included a question of the roles respondents may have, and five questions of the major concerns in any project that relates to metadata, regarding design and planning of digital projects, element set standards, data contents in a record, authority files and controlled vocabularies, and metadata encoding. Findings from the survey are reported and a workflow chart is included in this paper.

TL;DR: The design space is used to structure a retrospective analysis of the three major alternative metadata designs considered during the design of the WebDAV distributed authoring protocol.
Abstract: This paper provides a detailed description of the general design space for metadata storage capabilities. The design space considers issues of metadata identification, typing and representation, dynamic behavior, predefined and user-defined metadata, schema discovery/update, operations, API packaging/marshalling, searching, and versioning. The design space is used to structure a retrospective analysis of the three major alternative metadata designs considered during the design of the WebDAV distributed authoring protocol. Deployment experience with WebDAV properties is also discussed, with the most successful use occurring in custom client/server pairs and in protocol extensions.

TL;DR: In this paper, infrastructure metadata information is collected about a virtual resource of a virtual cloud and a storage of infrastructure metadata is updated using the collected information, and the updating of the storage of metadata is performed with the collected metadata.
Abstract: Processing infrastructure metadata information about a virtual resource of a virtual cloud is disclosed. Infrastructure metadata information is collected. The collected metadata information is about a virtual resource of a virtual cloud. A storage of infrastructure metadata information is updated. The updating of the storage of infrastructure metadata information is performed using the collected information.

TL;DR: The system provides a platform for users to register, browse, search and evaluate learning resources, and is a decentralized framework with several metadata servers to provide services that supports distributed queries and the evaluation loop of learning resources.
Abstract: The rapid increase of learning resources makes it difficult to search, manage and reuse. Using metadata is an efficacious way to solve this problem. With consistent descriptions of the characteristics of learning resources, searching becomes more specific and accurate, management becomes more simple and uniform, and sharing becomes more efficient and in-depth. The Learning Object Metadata Schema developed by IEEE P1484.12 is one of the most promising metadata approaches for describing learning resources, on which we developed a learning resource metadata management system (LRMMS). The system provides a platform for users to register, browse, search and evaluate learning resources. It is a decentralized framework with several metadata servers to provide services. The system supports distributed queries and the evaluation loop of learning resources. Users can search resources from different points of view, especially educational needs. We also made the interface as user-friendly as possible.

TL;DR: This study used a concurrent triangulation mixed-methods approach to gather basic quantitative and qualitative data about how 11 information professionals and 16 scientists organized data sets for personal and repository use.
Abstract: The integration of scientific data sets into repository collections is a continuing challenge for research institutions. This study used a concurrent triangulation mixed-methods approach to gather basic quantitative and qualitative data about how 11 information professionals and 16 scientists organized data sets for personal and repository use. The results incorporate comments from study participants that elaborate on descriptive metadata use, data curation practices, and organization styles/preferences.
