TL;DR: An approach based on visualization and ontology techniques to analyze large repository of geographic metadata to support the search for expressive geographic resources and to integrate some of these techniques and concepts to facilitate data searching activity is presented.
Abstract: The paper presents an approach based on visualization and ontology techniques to analyze large repository of geographic metadata: the aim of the metadata analysis is to support the search for expressive geographic resources. The approach is characterized by a visual reasoning to facilitate the navigation in an unfamiliar space of geographic metadata and a semantic reasoning to support the seeker in the definition of the search criteria. In particular, the analysis of categorical attributes of metadata is considered. Techniques and concepts of information visualization, graphic interaction and ontology are analyzed and exploited: the main principle of the approach is to integrate some of these techniques and concepts to facilitate data searching activity.

TL;DR: This paper introduces the concept of metadata for agricultural learning resources, and compares two particular cases: one application profile based on the Dublin Core Metadata Element Set (DCMES) and the otherbased on the IEEE Learning Object Metadata (LOM).
Abstract: Agricultural learning repositories can provide new opportunities for sharing, accessing, using and reusing learning resources online. Metadata plays a crucial role in such systems: apart from simply indexing resources, metadata makes it easier to discover a learning resource in a repository, as well as to decide about ways to use it for teaching or learning purposes. In the context of agricultural education and training, a variety of appropriate metadata standards may be selected, adapted and implemented for a learning repository. In this paper we introduce the concept of metadata for agricultural learning resources, and compare two particular cases: one application profile based on the Dublin Core Metadata Element Set (DCMES) and the other based on the IEEE Learning Object Metadata (LOM). The paper attempts to identify similarities and differences between the two case studies and to outline issues that have to be resolved in order to harmonize such efforts.

TL;DR: In this article, a metadata application programming interface (API) is provided to abstract metadata from an incoming business object and provide it to an adapter for processing, such that the adapter receives the metadata from the metadata API in a common format that is compatible with the adapter.
Abstract: An apparatus, system, and method are disclosed for providing seamless multiple format metadata abstraction. A metadata application programming interface (API) is provided to abstract metadata from an incoming business object and provide it to an adapter for processing. The metadata API is configured to operate on multiple metadata formats such as SDO and JavaBean such that the adapter receives the metadata from the metadata API in a common format that is compatible with the adapter. In this manner, the multiple metadata formats may be plugably used with the adapter.

TL;DR: RSL developed the SPECCHIO system which is based on a relational database and provides data input, query and output mechanisms that strive to minimize the manual data capture.
Abstract: Metadata is important for the interpretation of scientific data, quality assessment and long term usability of data sets. The sharing of spectral data collections among research groups is uncommon and one of the reasons for this is the missing standardisation of the sampling process. Appropriate metadata serves the purpose of detailing the sampling procedure and the surrounding conditions during data capture, thus providing necessary information for data sharing. Reliable data retrieval requires the organised storage of spectral and metadata. To this means RSL developed the SPECCHIO system which is based on a relational database and provides data input, query and output mechanisms that strive to minimize the manual data capture. SPECCHIO serves as a nonredundant repository and source for spectral signatures which can be retrieved by metadata queries. The system will be used in the level 2/3 processing of the APEX (Airborne Prism Experiment) product generation to support the classification of natural and manmade materials and landcovers.
