TL;DR: In this paper, an independent distributed metadata system and method for computing environments is presented, where metadata which is associated with data at one or more data source locations, may be distributed independently of the data and manipulated independently to generate various computing environments.
Abstract: An independent distributed metadata system and method are provided. With the system and method, metadata, which is associated with data at one or more data source locations, may be distributed independently of the data and manipulated independently to generate various computing environments. For example, a user may obtain a copy of metadata and use this metadata, at a remote location from the data source location, to create a computing environment, such as a virtual server, web page or the like. The computing environment created by the user consists entirely of metadata and does not include the actual data to which the metadata is associated. In this way, different users may have independent copies of the metadata and use it to generate their own computing environments without having to have access to the actual data. When the computing environment is to be implemented in a computing device, such as a server or servers on a network, the metadata defining the computing environment may be uploaded to the computing device. The computing device may then perform a verification of the metadata with the original metadata source location and download the corresponding data from the data source location. Thereafter, the computing environment may be made available for use via the server, the metadata and the data associated with the metadata.

TL;DR: It was found to be essential that a mixed-metadata approach should be considered, so that socially-constructed metadata approaches augment and enhance standards-based ones through proactive user engagement and a platform of collaboration afforded through the adoption of Web 2.0 technologies.
Abstract: Current discussions on the use of Linked Data for digital libraries favor standards-based (expert-created) metadata approaches. The inclusion of socially-constructed (user-created) metadata such as tagging, ratings, reviews, and recommendations is scant or absent. While efforts by the world's major national and academic libraries to release their bibliographic data (metadata) are an important step toward the adoption of Linked Data principles, as this article argues, without the metadata richness that would be obtained by including socially-constructed metadata (Web 2.0), the current efforts may result in sub-optimal utilization of the potential of Linked Data. With the aim of exploring and investigating the potential roles of metadata linking, this article presents the results of 21 in-depth interviews conducted with Library and Information Science (LIS) professionals. A constructivist grounded theory analysis of the interview data resulted in the emergence of four metadata principles—namely, the princip...

TL;DR: This short paper outlines the key components of the NERC DataGrid: a discovery service, a vocabulary service and a software stack deployed both centrally to provide a data discovery portal, and at data providers to provide local portals and data and metadata services.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors describe a system for processing metadata associated with clinical trial data, where a computing device receives collected data with embedded metadata, and accesses a database to determine characteristics of the embedded metadata.
Abstract: Systems and methods for processing metadata associated with a clinical trial are described. In one aspect, a computing device receives collected data with embedded metadata. The device extracts the embedded metadata, and accesses a database to determine characteristics of the embedded metadata. The device then accesses protocol rules where the protocol rules are a set of data collection requirements and procedures for a given clinical trial. The device ensures compliance of the embedded metadata by comparing the characteristics of the embedded metadata with the protocol rules. The device then reports the compliance or non-compliance of the collected data.
