TL;DR: The results of the study suggest that the proposed metadata filer may be an effective interface tool to improve users' performances in identifying information in an intranet portal organizational memory information system.
Abstract: An intranet portal is proposed as an information infrastructure to support organizational learning. Specifically, an agent-like metadata filter for easy information/knowledge retrieval in the intranet portal is suggested and tested. The metadata filter preserves the context of digital objects and presents an uncluttered window by controlling the metadata elements. An experiment using 20 participants examined whether the metadata filter reduces search and retrieval performance time (the dependent variable). The main results indicate that the metadata filter significantly (36%) improved user's performance in identifying information. The results of the study suggest that the proposed metadata filer may be an effective interface tool to improve users' performances in identifying information in an intranet portal organizational memory information system.

28 Jul 2005TL;DR: In this article, an improved system and method for an extensible metadata architecture for digital images is provided, where the metadata query reader may be operably coupled to a decoder having a block reader for identifying metadata blocks in an image file and associating a metadata reader with each metadata block.
Abstract: An improved system and method for an extensible metadata architecture for digital images is provided. Executable software code may be operably coupled to a metadata query reader and a metadata query writer for requesting operations for manipulating metadata in an image file. The metadata query reader may be operably coupled to a decoder having a block reader for identifying metadata blocks in an image file and associating a metadata reader with each metadata block. Each metadata reader may then enumerate the metadata in the metadata block associated with that metadata reader. The metadata query writer may be operably coupled to an encoder having a block writer for associating a metadata writer with each metadata block to be written to an image file. Each metadata writer may then write metadata in the metadata block associated with that metadata writer.

TL;DR: A case study was conducted to gauge the status of metadata provision for statistical tables on the Internet, and the result showing insufficient and inconsistent provision of metadata demonstrate the need for more discussions on statistical metadata from the ordinary web users' perspective.
Abstract: As increasingly diverse kinds of information materials are available on the Internet, it becomes a challenge to define an adequate level of metadata provision for each different type of material in the context of digital libraries. This study explores issues of metadata provision for a particular type of material, statistical tables. Statistical data always involves numbers and numeric values which should be interpreted with an understanding of underlying concepts and constructs. Because of the unique data characteristics, metadata in the statistical domain is essential not only for finding and discovering relevant data, but also for understanding and using the data found. However, in statistical metadata research, more emphasis has been put on the question of what metadata is necessary for processing the data and less on what metadata should be presented to users. In this study, a case study was conducted to gauge the status of metadata provision for statistical tables on the Internet. The websites of two federal statistical agencies in the United States were selected and a content analysis method was used for that purpose. The result showing insufficient and inconsistent provision of metadata demonstrate the need for more discussions on statistical metadata from the ordinary web users' perspective.

TL;DR: A tool which handles all the metadata created and used throughout a large-scale enterprise software project is presented, allowing a faster development process, as well as the design of a broad technical framework which fully separates the business logic code from technical concerns.
Abstract: We present a tool which handles all the metadata created and used throughout a large-scale enterprise software project. The tool is used to visually create and edit different metadata specification documents, such as data entities, visual forms, queries, interfaces, transactions and so forth, and then automatically generate code from them. This enables a faster development process, as well as the design of a broad technical framework which fully separates the business logic code from technical concerns. The repository uses a unique unified data model and type system, allowing us to define and edit any level of metadata – from meta-metadata models to actual applicative data – using the same tool. This paper describes both the tool's design as well as the development process which it supports and improves.
