Abstract: The metadata requirements for master data management (MDM) exceed the typical demands of application development, because the ability to consolidate and integrate data from many sources is bound to be hampered by variant business terms, definitions, and semantics. However, once a decision is made to use metadata as a lever for enabling the migration to the master data environment, it is wise to consider the more sophisticated means for enterprise information management that can be activated via the metadata management program. The key to information sharing through an MDM repository is a solid set of data standards for defining and managing enterprise data and a comprehensive business metadata management scheme for controlling the use of enterprise data. This chapter discusses data standards and metadata management. It explores each layer of metadata from the bottom up and reviews its relevance to the MDM framework. In turn, the MDM team should use the requirements to identify candidate metadata management tools that support the types of activities described in this chapter. The technology should not drive the process, but it should be the other way around. Solid metadata management supports more than just MDM—good enterprise information management relies on best practices in activating the value that metadata provides.

Abstract: Today filesystems of big companies are both huge and distributed amongst the world. They contain huge sets of metadata, but are not optimized to analyze them. In contrast, if metadata is stored in a database system and updated synchronously, it could be analyzed and processed in a much easier and straightforward way. Then even adding new attributes, not natively supported by the underlying filesystem, is easily possible. Thus, synchronous metadata storage in a database system can help managing and administrating huge filesystems efficiently but must not slow down the filesystem significantly. The aim of this paper is to describe possible solutions for synchronous metadata storage, inspect how such an integration of filesystem and database system might look like and evaluate the performance.

Abstract: For the digital libraries of China, the development of networked information resources, especially of metadata, is still a principal task. In the same time, a huge amount of information resources has been accumulated and the exploitation of them is far from sufficient. The current chief utility-keyword search undermines seriously the potential values of them, especially the metadata, for the metadata contain valuable content description and indexing information. To solve this problem, we devise a new paradigmintegrated knowledge network. It is formed by merging the classification and thesaurus into a concept network and then distributing the metadata records into the concept nodes according to their subjects, just like the "shelving" of the metadata. We have built an experiment system Vision by incorporating a portion of the Chinese Classification and Thesaurus with the bibliographic data of computing domain from Peking University Library. Such a knowledge network is not only a framework for metadata organizing, but also a structure for knowledge navigation, retrieval and learning, and we believe it will be a catalyst for the digital libraries to come to knowledge management.

Practices, workflows, and barriers to successful implementation of metadata strategies are addressed. The text concludes with potential strategies for overcoming these barriers and linking the often uncataloged deep content in these systems to the linked open Web.
