TL;DR: A framework for the evaluation of user interaction with textual metadata surrogates in the search result interfaces of various types of Information Retrieval (IR) systems is proposed and the implications would be to inform designers and researchers of IR systems about the main components of users' interaction withmetadata surrogates and to facilitate the process of evaluating metadata surrogate in terms of content and presentation.
Abstract: This paper proposes a framework for the evaluation of user interaction with textual metadata surrogates in the search result interfaces of various types of Information Retrieval (IR) systems. Metadata surrogates are representations of the full-text documents displayed to the user as a list of retrieved results after a search has been performed in an IR system. By examining the metadata surrogates, users can make judgments about the relevance of the full-text document without having to access and evaluate the document itself, thus saving a considerable amount of time and effort. The literature review, however, reveals a lack of frameworks for the evaluation of users' interaction with metadata surrogates. The implications of such a framework would be to inform designers and researchers of IR systems about the main components of users' interaction with metadata surrogates and to facilitate the process of evaluating metadata surrogates in terms of content and presentation.

TL;DR: This paper analyzes the requirements of the import process for general digital libraries and argues that they are best met by an extensible architecture that facilitates the addition of new document formats and metadata facilities to existing digital library systems.
Abstract: Flexible digital library systems need to be able to accept, or "import," documents and metadata in a variety of forms, and associate metadata with the appropriate documents. This paper analyzes the requirements of the import process for general digital libraries. The requirements include (a) format conversion for source documents, (b) the ability to incorporate existing conversion utilities, (c) provision for metadata to be specified in the document files themselves and/or in separate metadata files, (d) format conversion for metadata files, (e) provision for metadata to be computed from the document content, and (f) flexible ways of associating metadata with documents or sets of documents. We argue that these requirements are so open-ended that they are best met by an extensible architecture that facilitates the addition of new document formats and metadata facilities to existing digital library systems. An implementation of this architecture is briefly described.

TL;DR: In this article, a method and system for managing metadata for a plurality of data containers that are stored at one or more storage volumes in a storage system is described, which is used to respond to a user request for information regarding the storage system.
Abstract: Method and system is provided for managing metadata for a plurality of data containers that are stored at one or more storage volumes in a storage system. The metadata is collected from one or more storage volumes and then provided to a catalog module. The catalog module pre-processes the metadata and then generates a searchable data structure. The searchable data structure may then be used to respond to a user request for information regarding the storage system.

TL;DR: In this paper, a method of metadata management is provided, in which metadata associated with information objects is important in the management and classification of electronic information referred to as information objects, and a metadata schema structure definition is defined enabling metadata schema to be applied to the information objects to ensure consistent creation and management of hierarchical metadata across and organization and interoperability between different metadata schemas.

TL;DR: The status ofmetadata management technology and vendors is reviewed, and some of the key issues that are beyond the capabilities of metadata management products and are in the domain of consulting services are outlined.
Abstract: Metadata captures the semantics of data in disparate data sources in an integrated enterprise information system. As such, there has long been a universal agreement on its importance. However, there are only a small number of vendors that offer metadata management systems as a separate product. In this article, I review the status of metadata management technology and vendors, and outline some of the key issues that are beyond the capabilities of metadata management products and are in the domain of consulting services.
