TL;DR: A framework for customizable metadata authoring that addresses the issues and challenges of metadata standards and the challenges in metadata creation is described, using the domain of learning objects.
Abstract: Metadata is an increasingly important aspect of resource discovery. Good metadata has the potential to increase discovery and reuse and to facilitate interoperability of digital assets. Using the domain of learning objects, issues associated with the application of metadata standards and the challenges in metadata creation are examined. A framework for customizable metadata authoring that addresses the issues and challenges is described. The framework consists of flexible metadata schema, metadata schema views, templates, collaborative metadata editing, contextual help, and an effective interface component selection. A prototype implementation of the framework, CLOMAT (Customizable Learning Objects Metadata Authoring Tool), is used to illustrate the framework in operation. An initial evaluation of this prototype indicates substantial productivity gains over conventional metadata creation tools.

TL;DR: This paper presents a pattern language that addresses preliminarily the internal structure of metadata-based frameworks, helping in the understanding and development of such kind of framework.
Abstract: Metadata-based frameworks are those that process their logic based on the metadata of the classes whose instances they are working with. Many recent frameworks use this to get a higher reuse level and to be more suitably adapted to the application needs. However, there is not yet a complete best practices documentation or reference architecture for the development of frameworks by using the metadata approach. As a result, this paper presents a pattern language that addresses preliminarily the internal structure of metadata-based frameworks, helping in the understanding and development of such kind of framework.

TL;DR: The authors present the architecture of a modular frame-based IC design system and elucidate the software structure adopted for the management of metadata in its CAD framework, which is efficient, operates in a distributed hardware environment, controls concurrent access, and offers a high-level query interface for metadata browsing.
Abstract: A key aspect of a CAD framework is the management of metadata, i.e., high-level information about the structure and status of the design. The authors present the architecture of a modular frame-based IC design system and elucidate the software structure adopted for the management of metadata in its CAD framework. The metadata management software module is efficient, operates in a distributed hardware environment, controls concurrent access, and offers a high-level query interface for metadata browsing. >

TL;DR: In this paper, metadata queries are used to specify rules for content distribution jobs, allowing flexible, intelligent deployment, expiration and syndication of code and content across an enterprise or content network.
Abstract: In a system for metadata-based distribution of content, metadata queries are used to specify rules for content distribution jobs, allowing flexible, intelligent deployment, expiration and syndication of code and content across an enterprise or content network. A configurable payload adapter receives the metadata query, parses and translates the metadata into a form specific to the particular implementation, and then queries a metadata repository to identify a list of digital assets that satisfy the specified criterion specified by the metadata. The assets are retrieved from a content repository and distributed, syndicated and/or expired according to the distribution rules. Intelligent delivery of digital assets enables syndication of content based on offers and subscriptions.

TL;DR: An ontology and rule based system that significantly increases the productivity of those who create metadata, and the quality of the metadata they produce, and is discussed in tools developed for creating e-learning material conformant with the SCORM reference model and the IEEE LTSC LOM standard.
Abstract: In this paper we describe an ontology and rule based system that significantly increases the productivity of those who create metadata, and the quality of the metadata they produce. The system suggests values for metadata elements using a combination of four methods: inheritance, aggregation, content based similarity and ontology-based similarity. Instead of aiming for automated metadata generation we have developed a mechanism for suggesting the most relevant values for a particular metadata field. In addition to generating metadata from standard sources such as object content and user profiles, the system benefits from considering metadata record assemblies, metadata repositories, explicit domain ontologies and inference rules as prime sources for metadata generations. In this paper we first introduce the basic features of metadata systems and provide a typology of metadata records and metadata elements. Next we analyze the source of suggested values for metadata elements and discuss four methods of metadata generation. We discuss how the operations on objects the metadata are describing affect suggested metadata values and we present decision tables for the metadata generation scheduling algorithm. Finally, we discuss the use of our system in tools developed for creating e-learning material conformant with the SCORM reference model and the IEEE LTSC LOM standard.
