TL;DR: The authors will discuss the OHIOLINK Electronic Thesis and Dissertations (ETD) as an example of how Anglo‐American Cataloging Rules 2nd and Machine Readable Cataloging (MARC21) are used as metadata to store, describe and access this unique information resource.
Abstract: Metadata standards existing today range from very complex to very simple. Relative simplicity or complexity of metadata standards depends in large part on the resources for which they were created and the depth of description that is deemed necessary to make these resources accessible. This paper reviews the differences between metadata standards and current cataloging practices, and discusses how the various metadata standards are applied in libraries. In addressing these issues, the authors introduce definitions of key concepts of metadata and cataloging standards and provide an overview of the most common metadata schemes. The discussion of current cataloging practices includes an overview of the most commonly used cataloging practices and standards, the impact of metadata on library practice and the role of librarians related to metadata. The authors will discuss the OHIOLINK Electronic Thesis and Dissertations (ETD) as an example of how Anglo‐American Cataloging Rules 2nd (AACR2) and Machine Readable Cataloging (MARC21) are used as metadata to store, describe and access this unique information resource.

TL;DR: The development process of a Chinese metadata system, Metadata Interchange for Chinese Information (MICI), and an XML/metadata management system, Metalogy, developed under the Digital Museum Initiative sponsored by the National Science Council of Taiwan are described.
Abstract: Metadata plays a crucial role in a digital library/museum environment. However, the development of metadata is not an easy task. Its formulation starts with analysing the attributes of collections as well as understanding the user information needs and information seeking behaviour. The issue of interoperability also needs to be considered in terms of both semantics and syntax. This paper discusses issues related to the development of metadata in Taiwan. It describes the development process of a Chinese metadata system, Metadata Interchange for Chinese Information (MICI), and an XML/metadata management system, Metalogy. Both were developed under the Digital Museum Initiative sponsored by the National Science Council of Taiwan.

TL;DR: This paper introduces an approach that relies on declarative descriptions of (i) mapping rules, specifying how the rdf data is generated, and of (ii) raw data access interfaces to automatically and incrementally generate provenance and metadata information.
Abstract: Provenance and other metadata are essential for determining ownership and trust. Nevertheless, no systematic approaches were introduced so far in the Linked Data publishing workow to capture them. Dening such metadata remained independent of the rdf data generation and publishing. In most cases, metadata is manually dened by the data publishers (person-agents), rather than produced by the involved applications (software-agents). Moreover, the generated rdf data and the published one are considered to be one and the same, which is not always the case, leading to pure, condense and often seductive information. This paper introduces an approach that relies on declarative descriptions of (i) mapping rules, specifying how the rdf data is generated, and of (ii) raw data access interfaces to automatically and incrementally generate provenance and metadata information. This way, it is assured that the metadata information is accurate, consistent and complete.

TL;DR: In this paper, the role of collection-level description in managing ingest to harvested repositories, subsequent harvesting by secondary aggregators, and the contextualisation of institutional and aggregated repositories in the wider information retrieval environment is examined.
Abstract: Purpose – The purpose of this article is to review metadata issues identified in recent research carried out in Scotland on services based on metadata aggregation via OAI‐PMH, and to examine the role of collection‐level description in managing ingest to harvested repositories, subsequent harvesting by secondary aggregators, and the contextualisation of institutional and aggregated repositories in the wider information retrieval environment.Design/methodology/approach – The paper reviews the output of several projects involving institutional repositories and collection‐level description in Scotland.Findings – Collection‐level description is a useful tool for aggregator services, but further work is required to accommodate information about the manipulation of metadata sets. Communities need to consider how best to incorporate structured collection information within the OAI‐PMH for their specific purposes.Originality/value – The paper shows the importance of recent developments in collection description me...
