TL;DR: In this article, a nonlinear approach has been tried to predict the roll response of a vessel in a beam sea and various representations of damping and restoring terms found in the literature are investigated.

Abstract: Inaccuracy in prediction of manoeuvring and lack of robustness of closed-loop autopilot control have been a surprising experience for several ships with low metacentric height. Until now, effective investigations of these phenomena have been hindered by lack of knowledge on the precise interaction between roll and lateral motions. This was changed with the construction of a unique four-degrees-of-freedom roll planar motion mechanism (RPMM) at the Danish Maritime Institute. The paper presents complete nonlinear models for a container ship obtained with this facility. Model scale predictions are compared with full scale results and shown to give a good replication of the dynamic properties after tuning of a few parameters to account for model to full scale differences. Dynamic control properties are discussed, and the importance of roll couplings is investigated. Finally, response operators for waves are provided for a relevant range of metacentric heights, and wind data are included to make the characterisa...

TL;DR: In this article, the influence of stern shape on the parametric stability of fishing vessels is studied, both analytically and experimentally, and the analytical method takes into consideration the effects of the heave and pitch motions and wave passage and shows good agreement with experimental results.

TL;DR: In this article, the free motions in waves of a submerged vehicle with a spherical hull from but different metacentric heights are analyzed by considering the submerged vehicle as a neutrally buoyant sphere.

TL;DR: In this article, a study of the seakeeping performance of a set of fishing vessels is carried out aiming to identify the seaking criteria, and vessel conditions that limit the operability of the fishing vessels in certain sea states.
