27 Aug 2013TL;DR: In this article, a data management apparatus may include a non-transitory memory coupled to a processor and the processor may be configured for managing data associated with one or more applications by processing instructions stored in the memory.
Abstract: A data management apparatus may include a non-transitory memory coupled to a processor The processor may be configured for managing data associated with one or more applications by processing instructions stored in the memory For example, the instructions may cause the processor to determine metadata associated with content of an associated data repository In some cases, the metadata may include information corresponding to an application associated with the data repository Based on the metadata, the instructions may then cause the processor to create a data archive from at least a portion of the data repository and periodically analyze the metadata according to one or more data retention policies to determine whether the associated data archive is a candidate for destruction

01 Apr 1998TL;DR: In this article, the authors describe a metadata specification designed to support dynamic configuration of metadata software by capturing features of metadata standards, including the classification of the metadata standard, the metadata schema, and the metadata expression.
Abstract: A critical problem for metadata applications is flexibility. A metadata application must be sufficiently flexible to cope with changes to metadata standards over time and to allow users to extend a standard to cope with local requirements. A key component of supporting flexible metadata applications is software whcih can be dynamically configured by a specification of the metadata standard. By contrast, in current metadata software the metadata standard is embedded in the code, making changes relatively more difficult and expensive. Configurable software also leads to better tools at a lower cost, as it is not necessary to re-implement functionality for every new metadata standard. This paper describes a metadata specification designed to support dynamic configuration of metadata software by capturing features of metadata standards. The specification comprises three components: the classification of the metadata standard, the metadata schema, and the metadata expression.

TL;DR: In this article, a method and system for migrating data between databases is provided, where metadata is obtained from a source database and used to determine the manner in which the data within the source database should be migrated to a target database.
Abstract: A method and system for migrating data between databases is provided. Metadata is obtained from a source database and used to determine the manner in which the data within the source database should be migrated to a target database. The metadata provides a mechanism for structuring queries to retrieve the data within the source database in a generic manner, thereby providing a generic determination of the structure of the data to be migrated. The dependencies among tables in the source database are discovered, thereby providing an order to the migration operations to be performed when migrating the data. This order ensures that the data can be migrated correctly in the presence of referential integrity (foreign key) constraints. In addition, custom mapping operations may be performed during the migration operations so that the data from the source database is modified before writing the data to the target database.

28 Jan 2008TL;DR: In this article, a metadata collection system comprising a plurality of content management servers each capable of managing content and content metadata as local content and managing content metadata stored in another content management server as reference content is presented.
Abstract: In a metadata collection system comprising a plurality of content management servers each capable of managing content and content metadata as local content and managing content metadata stored in another content management server as reference content and a metadata collection apparatus connected with the plurality of content management servers to collect metadata from the plurality of content management servers, the metadata collection apparatus collects metadata from the individual content management servers based upon server information held at the content management servers and category identifiers appended to tree structures generated at the content management servers by individually referencing the plurality of content management servers.
